I think it's been a big improvement, the spanners that are still getting through seem to be deleted within a few minutes.

From the choice of the About MSE and Site Feedback section of the forum by spammers today, MSE seems to have no control whatsoever.


I don't think it would help to hide what is happening by not posting new spam members. It would make it easier for MSE to leave it to BGs when the responsibility to deal with it rests with MSE.
