I have just sat and read the entire thread, 2 things that I would ditch are the window cleaner and haircuts. Windows don't need cleaning that often, I have never had a window cleaner. As for haircuts, I haven't visited a hairdresser for over 5 years, I watch YouTube tutorials and do it myself, that would be almost £20 saved each month...

US - I am hooked on the Payment a Day challenge at the moment. I really find it so motivating. Maybe you would too?

I will have a look into that challenge

The windowcleaner comes once a month. The house is that tall that we need someone to clean the outside as we can't reach it and are scared of heights

The hairdresser comes to the house when I call her which is about every 8 to 10 weeks. She cuts both mine and OH's for £11

I couldn't consider trying to cut our hair myself

We couldn't afford to swap the cars. I need my car because of my health condition and OH needs his as he can do upto £35,000 mile a year depending on where he is working. Smaller cars would not be beneficial to us.

    They bleedin' would!
Everything about them is expensive, road tax, maintenance, fuel...

Have you seen how cheap modern cars can be to buy and run?

I live in a block of flats, the windows get cleaned twice a year. Yes, they get a bit grubby in-between but they still let the light in and I can still see out of them perfectly well!

Are you worried that if you make bigger or more noticeable changes your husband will wonder why?

Instead of cutting your hair yourself could you not go a couple of weeks longer between cuts?

I'm sorry but I agree with the others about the window cleaner, its not a necessity and the money would be best put to use paying off your debts. I haven't had my rear windows cleaned in 2 years due to building works in the garden and even now they aren't filthy. Why don't you cancel it and see how you get on, then if you decide that you absolutely can't live without it at least you have given it a try.

This was my general approach to everything when trying to cut back my spending, the only thing I couldn't trade down was butter, sausages and my tv/internet package as I need the internet for work and the tv is our only entertainment/treat. Oh and hubby kept a personal mobile as he was self employed.

I bought two items, 1.5ltr dilute orange juice and a lime. Total cost £1.20 from my budget. Well pleased with that. Means there is still money in my purse:) after a trip out.

Neither of those are essentials. LBM still some way away?

£11 is very cheap for both haircuts.

Why not tell the window cleaner to come once a quarter?

I agree with slowpoke, but do wonder if OP is thinking that she needs a big car in case she has to have a wheelchair? However, OP, if you needed a wheelchair you'd probably be eligible for Motability in which case you'd be getting rid of your own existing car anyway.

In the meantime, check out which smaller cars have the best boot-capacity.

I love the way people say 'get rid of the car and get something smaller and cheaper to run' when the person who owns the car is in a financial pickle.

USN states that the value of both cars is £6,000. However, she hasn't stated the value of the individual cars. Her oh's could be worth £5k and hers £1k for all we know.

Anyway, better the car you know than a new one you don't.

Right, I'll now climb down from my moral high horse and congratulate the op on walking to the post box and back. As she felt tired on the return trip and had in the past, fallen over, I will suggest that she gets a wlker with a flip-down seat. My mum has one and it allows her a bit more freedom to move around the house and garden as she knows if she is feeling tired, she can sit down and recover for a short while.

If the op lives near a are home, then it would be worth asking them if they have any that are str as all they do with them is throw them out.
