How To Divorce Your Parents:

I cut off all of my blood family - my parents were vile, self-centred, money-orientated narcissists, and my older sister was turning into the same. I was their scapegoat, the one to blame for everything, and my father even threatened to forge my name on an official document so that he could get some money. He genuinely thought I owed him for the privilege of being born and raised! Mother was a doormat to his ways, and turned her nasty tongue on me as a stress release valve, and the older sister was always beating me up and bullying me.
I regret nothing. They made their bed, they can damned well lie in it, all the while wallowing in self pity and self absorption, never understanding why anyone could possibly want out of their perfect family. I'll never regret it, and never seek contact with such toxic creatures. Quite frankly, when the parents die, all I'll feel is relief (that's if I ever get to hear about it).0 -
What do social services mean by "duty of care?" I think you should ask them.
When my mother died it was like a very distant relative dying. I was completely unaffected by it. She wasn't a very nice person and was an absolutely terrible mother. She thought she was a fantastic parent.
You can't have a duty of care over someone who makes your life hell. There are some people who believe that all mothers love their children and will do anything for them. This is not correct. There are some mothers who make their children's lives hell. Just because the child isn't physically abused doesn't mean that they aren't living in hell.0 -

No adult relatives have a 'duty of care' for each other.
Social services would like relatives to take on responsibilities to ease the pressure on them but there is no legal duty to do so.0
