I work in an independant coffee establishment and can tell you that many customers ask for a black coffee or black americano and then when you give them it .....ask for some milk. Doh!!

To cover myself...I always ask if they would like any milk and then get patronising looks from the ones that really DO want it black.

    Cant win!!!

I am that person! I cannot stand stretched, textured, scalded, foamed or heated milk in any form. It makes me retch.

I do like cold milk in my coffee though.
I'm an adult and I can eat whatever I want whenever I want and I wish someone would take this power from me.

I recently saw somewhere on here an expression "First World Problem", which just about sums up the OP's post.

The amount of passion engendered by a burger and cheese (or not) astounds me.

Oh, and I agree with the Americano conumdrum - but I order a black coffee with cold milk please :-)

Buy a pint of milk at garage, present to cashier.
"Just this", with an emphasis on the just, I say.
"Any fuel then?" comes the reply.

    Sigh....

they have to ask in case of drive offs who fail to pay for fuel. some employers remove the cost of fuel from their wage!

In the supermarket the 'would you like any bags today' when I'm stood there waiting no bag in hand, pretty obvious, and 'have you found everything you were looking for today?' I would have asked before the checkout if I hadn't, but I do understand that they have to ask so it's not their fault.

And as for your burger it sounds like they were just clarifying so you should be glad they cared not to get your order wrong.

I have an Americano with milk which I add in myself because all other coffee choices are ones with excessive milkyness, which I hate.

And in some non chain cafes they have a machines with a white coffee choice which is more like a latte, so I ask for a black coffee with a bit of milk.

I hate really milky coffee, but can't drink it black

Ahhh! It's all madrhinos fault. :p:D

He/she's confusing all the baristas. We black Americano drinkers should be asking for an Americano and get it black with no milk. madrhino needs to ask for an "Americano with a hot milk on the side".

I agree. Sometimes things are annoying even when someone has not actually done anything wrong. Such as when you go into a shop knowing exactly what you want and the salesman insists on selling it to you!

I do think that tying yourself in knots trying to justify it on some spurious and twisted interpretation of the product name is pretty daft - and quite unnecessary.

    This is an odd one.

I sense you are critising me, yet your point seems to be in my defence.

    so thanks for that ;)

    I was agreeing with Piggywiggy.

Not sure why you think it's about you, except that yours was one of several posts where people tried to use rather ridiculous arguments that what the OP ordered was inherently ambiguous.

The server might have asked because she quite understandably, momentarily, lost concentration, because it's company policy or because people are often not clear about what they want. There's no need to try and justify perfectly understandable behaviour on the grounds of a twisted interpretation of English that doesn't even make sense when looked at closely. As demonstrated above.

So you agree with me it was reasonable for the McDonald's staff member to ask a follow up question to clarify whether they want cheese or not....

    Cheers
