My pet peeve is in coffee shops.
I've got used to having to add '... no milk' after asking for an Americano, despite the fact that most places describe an Americano' as 'black coffee'
Even then, I'm usually immediately asked " do you want milk in that ?"0 -

I drink black Americano too. I always say: "Large Black Americano please".
And then they ask if I want milk.... To be fair it's probably to cover themselves from the retards who want a White Americano. The man without a signature.0 -

To be fair the customer agent sees the message to enter the PIN way before the terminal displays it. And they probably say it to help the older people who are just confused or the ME! people texting on their phones. The man without a signature.0 -
I take it you have never worked in retail then? People go into autopilot, it's not the end of the world!
I know a couple of places I worked at we had a script to say at the till and were reprimanded if we didn't ask certain questions or say certain things. We even had to apologize for their wait even if they hadn't waited at all! Maybe they just wanted to make sure they had your order correct?0 -
(McDonalds) "I'll have a plain quarter pounder with cheese please."I don't think the McDonald's question is unreasonable. You specifically say "with cheese" when you order it! Asking a clarifying question over whether you want cheese or not on it seems sensible.
You could have meant you didn't want sauce or onion on it.
Which part of 'with cheese' are you struggling with? :rotfl:There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -

I have an Americano with milk which I add in myself because all other coffee choices are ones with excessive milkyness, which I hate.
And in some non chain cafes they have a machines with a white coffee choice which is more like a latte, so I ask for a black coffee with a bit of milk.
I hate really milky coffee, but can't drink it black0 -
Why do some people have so much difficulty working the English language?
If, for whatever reason, McShite do not offer a product called 'quarter pounder' (without the cheese option), the sensible and obvious way to ask for one without cheese is to ask for a 'quarter pounder, no cheese', rather than specifically asking for something you do not want: "plain quarter pounder with cheese".
It is almost universally understood in English that the specific overrides the general. There are two types of people in the world: Those that can extrapolate information.0 -
Which part of 'with cheese' are you struggling with? :rotfl:
Their argument is based on the premise that the product is named a "quarter pounder with cheese", which I can call product 'X'.
So if you ask for a plain 'X' then you may end up with only a bun and a burger. Do you see that?0 -
I'll reiterate for those struggling to comprehend this simple request.
The "quarter pounder" product comprises thus:
"A quarter pound*, 100% beef patty with two slices of cheese, onions, pickles, mustard and a dollop of Tomato Ketchup - all in a sesame seed bun."
Now, to ask for something "plain" is to ask for ALL elements other than the burger/bun to be removed.
Thus, a PLAIN quarter pounder would be for it to be comprised solely of a burger and a bun. To ask for a plain quarter pounder with cheese would thus imply that you would like all the !!!!! removed but would like the cheese to remain.
I'm not sure why this is so difficult.
If, however, you wanted a cheeseburger, to ask for it plain would still imply that you want the cheese, otherwise you would just be asking for a plain hamburger. There ISN'T a "hamburger" (no cheese) variant of the quarter pounder thus my point stands.0
