I have just had an online chat with BT to confirm that I can either pay £5 for something I dont want or downgrade to BTSport Lite and enter into a new 12 month contract. The advisor confirmed these were my 2 options. Extremely sneaky how they have doen this, I am shocked they can get away with it - surely Companies could just constantly change their options / T&C's to tie us into new contracts
I will hold fire on my downgrade (and new 12 month contract) to see if anyone else has any joy. Shocking
There is a third option and that is to cancel BT Sport completely , this way your not re contracted for 12 more months as you would be if you accept BTSport lite, and you don't pay the £5 as you would with the full BT Sport package, you would still be inside any minimum term you may have for your broadband though, it doesn't help with those people who took or renewed BT Broadband on the basis that they got 3 channels included for 'free'0 -

You don't have to sign a new contract. Unless your broadband is in minimum contract?
I was also concerned so I thought I'd try it out. When you get the email you have a link to "downgrade now".
- You enter your phone number and postcode
- It asks if you want to renew your broadband contract, you press no
- It asks if you'd like an offer on BT HD Sport for £4 or something a month, I press no
- They confirm my order or downgrading. Confirm I will get BT Sport 2 until 1st August. They also confirm that I will continue to recieve BT Sport for free until my broadband contract ends its minimum term
So I believe I have downgraded without getting into a new contact.0 -

You have done the same as me, but you have to be careful to either give 30 days notice to cancel BT Sport Lite to coincide with the end of your 12 month broadband contract or take out a new 12 month contract, otherwise BT will just bill you for the service without any notification."There are not enough superlatives in the English language to describe a 'Princess Coronation' locomotive in full cry. We shall never see their like again". O S Nock0 -
Gosh what a mess, just got the email, signed up about 3 months to BT, whole think stinks0

Well I was definately sent 2 emails that clearly say "to continue receiving your three BT Sport channels free renew your broadband". I cannot see how on earth their small print can over ride this. I am of the opinion that this mis-selling, and I will follow this up. There are much cheaper broadband suppliers that I could have signed up with, but the sport was an influencing factor.0

I got an e-mail yesterday '
Important BT Sport update'
which mentioned a five pound a month charge and very small print at the bottom of the e-mail saying: 'If you want to end your BT Sport subscription, you need to contact us by 31 July 2015'
I have absolutely no interest in Sport, and it just came 'free' with my BT Infinity but I've never used it, so I got onto BT via an online chat session and they removed it from my package.0 -
BT Care have just stated on Twitter that "downgrading" does not mean a new 12-month contract.
I would link to it, but this site seems to have a bit of a blunt spam filter.0 -
I have just managed to get BT to reduce this charge to £1.85 pm by discussing the contract with an agent on-line then on the phone - it took 55 mins but I am happy with that as it came as free as part of our BT Infinity broadband. As we also got a £125 Sainsbury's gift card when we opened the 12 month contract as well, I really can't complain.Don't get it perfect - Get it goingBetter Than Before0

I too am disgusted with this.
I was prepared to accept BT's, frankly, overpriced phone and broadband service in exchange for BT sport included. I am a big baseball fan, so I do watch this quite a lot and the odd football match.
I have the e-mail in front of me from earlier in the year;
Hello,
Here's an update on your order.
Your BT Sport discount
Thanks for renewing your BT Broadband contract to keep getting BT Sport for free.
Your new 12 month contract will start on 09-Feb-2015.
If you cancel your BT Sport Pack subscription and then sign up again later you'll need to agree to a new BT Broadband contract, with a minimum term of at least 12 months, to get BT Sport for free.
If you cancel your broadband, you'll need to pay the standard monthly price for the BT Sport Pack (have a look at the tariff guide at bt.com/tariffguide)

Thanks for choosing BT

Now as far as I am concerned I should not have to pay a penny until this 12 month period is up, no doubt by fiddling about with the channels they can get away with it.
Am I able to get out this 12 month contract, surely they cannot hold me to that?0 -
OK So as a BT broadband customer i have always had BT sport as a free service from BT for having BT Broadband . With that i get BT Sports 1 and BT sports 2 and ESPN .
My BT sport is being delivered via SKY box.
BT has informed me today that i will be getting charged £5 from August 2015.
This is different to what i signed up to their BT broadband for. I signed up for a fixed fee broadband service and to get BT sports 1 2 and other s with my BT broadband albeit for free. Now they want to charge me £5 extra that represents an increase of over 25% for the same package.
BT get out is that they are still offering me BT LITE which is only 1 Sports channel. That is different to what i have signed up for and less than what made me choose BT in the first instance.
I believe i should have the right to move ALL of my services away from BT and not be held to their contract term which has 6 months remaining .
BT disagrees. However i KNOW i am going to WIN on this and I'm writing here for the first time to tell people how to get out of there contract.
You do it by making an official complaint. Bt at some point will have to make you a final offer or final statement of their position .
You must make it clear to them in your letter (USE martins excellent resolver service) That you intend to push this matter ALL the way to the OMBUDSMAN service. Let them know that you know if it goes to the OMBUDSMAN service they will have to pay £550 for you referring it there.
So let me explain further. To cancel my contract they want me to pay £132. I say NO.. i want to cancel without penalty because you have changed the deal.
They disagree .. We can not agree so i refer it to Ombudsman. They will then have to pay £550 per every single referral to the ombudsman .
You let them know that you know this .. They will realise its in their own interest not to pay this fee as they will loose money and its easier to cancel your contract without penalty.
You get out of your contract and your free to go where ever you want.
I personally HATE sports so i couldn't care less about it. I just want to renegotiate my contract. As i know i can get a much better deal than I'm currently getting £40 per month for phone and fibre broadband.
Im hoping that over the next year i will save myself over £240 on this contract.
I had this same argument with Vodafone and they realised it was in their interest to settle with me and did and allowed me to cancel my contract without cost mid point. IT would of cost them more for it to go to the Ombudsman .0
