this problem is very similar to the orange complaint on here, which I was party to, a few years ago. Mobile phone users got free BB as part of their mobile phone contract, and then orange tried to take it away.
Success in the end that people were allowed to keep free BB until the end of their mobile contract, and then had to pay afterwards.
Took an age to get that sorted.0 -

I asked explicitly (during an online chat) and was told it would:
BT: I appreciate that ME however if you want you can downgrade to BT SPORT LITE for free.
ME: I assume that wouldn't enter me into a new contract?
BT: Yes that would however you'll still pay that you're paying now.Lifes_Grand_Plan wrote: »BT will never agree with me on the above - if they did then it would open the floodgates for everyone cancelling - so that is why you have to either like it, or go to the Ombudsman....
Unfortunately 99% of people will just not bother..... which means BT wins.
It's not something I have had to do before, but I will look into what's involved in taking this to the Ombudsman. Thanks!0 -

Its nothing scary MJ, I went through it a couple of times before (against Orange/EE) with changes to mobile phone contracts and won both times, the first time getting penalty free cancellation and compensation, the second time just penalty free cancellation.
Its free for you to do (regardless of the outcome) and costs the supplier (i.e. BT) a wedge of cash (again. regardless of the outcome).... so I am shocked that BT aren't more keen to settle this before it gets that far. They keep trying to fob me off saying that the ombudsman doesn't cover "business decisions" which is the same trick EE tried on me and look where that got them.... :rotfl:
I only have 6 months left on my contract so even at £5 a month it would only make them £30..... but they will go to the ombudsman and cost themselves £400 / £500....? Crazy!A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A

Thanks for the info LGP!

I have BT Fibre and BT TV with youview. (£12.50/month)
I called earlier this week and spoke to an English member of the call centre who gave me the 3 options:
1) Renew 18 month contract and pay nothing (didn't state whether discounts would be affected)
2) Stay as I am and pay the £5 extra per month
3) Downgrade to BT Sport Lite but I would have to renew for 12 months.
I was given no option to cancel, and no option to keep it free and not renew as Northern Mum had mentioned at 10:01 today.0 -
I recently had BT ADSL Broadband and BT TV installed. My contract started on 11th June and runs for 12 months. I've had a chat session this morning and they confirmed that I will get the BT Sport pack for "free" until my contract runs out in June 2016. No extra £5 a month.
So many mixed messages though. It is a mess.0 -
Just spoken with BT and had to cancel all Sport channels. If I wanted to have the Sports Lite for free I would have to have a new contract from August.
Told them how badly this has been handled and that being a loyal customer obviously doesn't pay. They over paid for European footie few people want and added some 'celeb' presenters and then dump the bill on customers. All she kept trying to do was sell BT TV... no I don't want your TV!0 -
Just had BT confirm on Twitter that downgrading to BT Sport Lite when in contract does NOT re-contract you:A big believer in karma, you get what you give :A

Were you mid-contract? They allowed you to cancel it all with no early exit charge? If so I will be doing this, even though I just spoke to Live Chat who told me I could downgrade to BT Sport Lite with no contract extension...0 -
BT is giving out very mixed messages, it seems. It's very unclear as they have so many different delivery methods, platforms, and packages which all share the same content.
I've recently signed up for Broadband and TV (including sport) on a 12 month contract. After speaking with them today, I've been told that the £5 charge will not apply to me at this stage.
She said that the charge will - she thinks - apply after my contract ends but she agreed I may want to contact them again at that stage.0
