BT Sport fiver a month

  • You've hit the nail on the head with this. Many of us could afford the extra fiver without blinking, and I think this is what BT is banking on.

But it has underestimated the volume of animosity it is conjuring up by the use of its inertia selling of the product.

I too, out of principle, will not succumb to BT's devious and underhand sales method. I would love to watch the Euro football games but I will not be blackmailed. I have downgraded to Bt Sport Lite. I have also cancelled BT Sport HD, thereby denying BT of £36 a year income. So, far from gaining £60 a year from me, they've lost £36pa. That's some strategic plan!

I have also made a note in my diary of when my current 18 month contract expires so that I can either negotiate a substantial reduction in my £33.99 per month charge for landline and broadband, or move elsewhere (but certainly not to Talk Talk).

I have also made a note in my diary when 12 months are up so I can cancel Caller Display as I have no intention of paying BT's outrageous charge for the two or three calls I get each month on my un-needed landline number.

Unfortunately mate, for every one person like you, there will be 100 if not 1000 who will just do nothing and as a result incur the extra charges...

  • Had a reply back from BT advising that I can leave penalty free if I wish. It doesn't clarify whether they would intend to offer a pro-rated refund of the Line Rental Saver but I would be expecting that if so...

    They also offered that I could have all of the BT Sport channels completely free if I took BT TV (with no activation fee) but the problems I have with that are;

    a) I am on a highly discounted BT BB and Phone package and I suspect the free TV package would require a new BB & Phone package which would (presumably) lose the discount making it highly uncompetitive.

    b) I don't have an aerial at home so cannot use their box anyway.

I have BT Broadband (Infinity) and BT Essential TV and in April I started with BT Mobile. I took out the TV package in January in part because I wanted to watch BT Sport on my TV rather than messing about with it on my laptop.

I got the same email as everyone else and I've just logged on to my account and it says it's free for me if I renew my contract or otherwise it's £5 a month.

So I already pay for BT TV and a recordable YouView box and they want an extra £5 a month for the sport channels? My contract was for 18 months from January so there's still a year to run on it.

If I renew my contract how long will it be for? 12 months from now or 12 months from when the current one expires? I don't want to be tied in to a long contract but I don't want to pay an extra £5 a month either.

I really don't know what to do. It's 'only' £5 but I don't like how this has come about, especially as line rental has been creeping up too. I actually agree with BT Sport being chargeable as people who don't want to watch it shouldn't have to subsidise it for those that do but this leaves a bitter taste. It's also really sneaky that this is opt out rather than opt in.

A big part of me feels like scrapping BT Sport. The amount of money in football these days is ridiculous and it's BT and Sky that are responsible for this with their ridiculous rights packages.

Really unsure about it all. I'd rather be armed with some facts before I contact BT.

Doesn't BT TV go via your broadband?

BT TV requires an aerial for freeview. Only additional channels go via your BB.

I'm in pretty much the same situation, I renewed in January this year to get the sport free. I just had a phone call and my renewal would be 18 months (from now - a new contract) to continue to get the Sports for free - which is exactly what they said in January!!

I'm really annoyed about this - don't care that much about the fiver but resent being railroaded into new contracts and terms every few months.

Like everyone else, I've had the pointless conversation, firstly with some bloke from overseas and then a slightly more helpful person in this country. I renewed my broadband deal in early May after specifically asking the question about continuing to receive free BT Sports channels. The lady yesterday explained that the advisors weren't aware back in May that they were going to charge as "it was a big secret".....no sh*t Sherlock! Her only options to me were:

    1. to remain on the full package and pay £5 per month
    2. to down grade to "Lite"
    3. to cancel all BT contracts for BB and line rental, which would cost me £177.

I expressed my dissatisfaction in the way I was mis-sold and misled and she offered me a £2.50 per month discount for 6 months (oooooh a whole £15) with the option to cancel it if I decided I still didn't want it before Aug 1st. Then she withdrew that as if she put me on a discount and I then cancelled I would be liable for a cancellation fee. I told her I definitely didn;t want it, she then told me if I downgraded now I might lose channels straightaway, not on 1st Aug.

This comes on top of a nightmare 12 months with BT Business where at various points they cut off our business phone lines and broadband for no apparent reason. BT are a total basket case.

I was going to try online chat/twitter but I think I'll go with the MSE Resolver Service. I love my TV Sport but paying £8.50 per month extra across BT and Sky to watch exactly the same as before is the straw that broke the camel's back

Edit: Resolver complaint submitted. Let's see........
  • Have just spoken to BT again after my sister just renewed her contract at all the same discounted prices for 18 months. But it seems that what price you are paying now, and what services you take all have a bearing on what they will let you do!
My sister has been paying £3 more a month than me for the unlimited broadband, which last year I was paying more than her, just depends it seems what they offer on the day of renewal. Both our contracts started in the same week for 12 months. Because she is on this price it's ok for her to recontract for 18 months and keep all discounts, but I am on too heavy a discount already so my broadband will go up to £18 a month!!!!!(I don't think so)!!
The whole situation is being handled appallingly and again I repeat the point that it is not free to all existing customers on broadband and BT TV as we will be paying more than £5 extra!! We only gained the discount for being loyal customers and asking what was the best price they could offer for the next year. They obviously we're aware of this sports change and I just wonder how many people they have deliberately put in this situation to trap them.

I too am on a highly discounted BB & phone package and have just moved over to BT TV on YouView (from out of contract BT Vision). They locked me into a new 12mth TV contract. They did not extend or lock me into a new BB contract and I did not lose my discounts.

This entire promotion is a massive PR disaster and a total, utter, mess.
