BT Sport fiver a month

Options
Just had a very heated discussion with BT about the new £5.00 charge for BT Sport. Received an email from them today telling me that from 1st August I would have to pay this charge or my service go down to "sports lite" which is 1 BT sports channel only. Looked back to when I renewed this in January and I have two emails from BT saying renew your Broadband now to continue receiving your 3 BT sports channels. I have spoken to BT who don't seem to have any knowledge of sending out these emails, but seems to be mis-selling to me. Currently waiting for a manager to phone me on Monday.

Just wondered if anybody else was in the same situation ? i understood the UEFA games would be shown on a new BT sports channel, which would be extra.

  • I'm sure this will have been thought of. The fact you are still getting BT Sport 1 for free probably covers the terms set out in the small print.

Yes BT are starting to try to persuade people to take out a BT TV subscription. BT Sport Europe channel is the carrot, taking away Free BT Sport 2 and ESPN is the stick.
  • I got the same email this morning.

My objection is that if I do nothing, I will be charged £5 extra each month for the new offerings.

It really should be do nothing and nothing will change. Customers should have to opt in to the new service.

I shall be making a complaint to Ofcom later today, but I'm not holding out for any success with that useless organisation.

I shall NOT be subscribing to BT's new offering.

I renewed my contract a few weeks ago (upgraded to fibre-optic) and was told over the phone that I would continue to get free BT Sports.

Yesterday I got the email saying there would be a £5 a month charge if I did not downgrade.

    This could get interesting.
  • Just had exactly the same email and conversation with a very nice lady at BT. I had renewed and upgraded (to Infinity) my contract with BT just 10 days ago and was told that I would continue to get Sports. The lady that I spoke with this morning said that I would have been told that because the customer service people didn't know about any new prices until yesterday and they are now very busy!
Neither the representative that I spoke to or her manager could do anything to change the process so I have logged an official complaint with BT based on the fact that they have changed the terms of my contract (removed FA Cup football etc) after getting me to renew on a promise of continued supply. Next stop Offcom or maybe Mr Lewis would like to talk to BT?
  • In March I was emailed by BT and asked to renew my BT Sport discount to avoid a £6.75 out-of-contract charge. I presumed I'd renewed my BT Broadband and the 3 free BT Sport channels for another 12 months.

Unless I pay £5 a month from 1 August, I'll only get BT Sport 1 for free. The monthly HD charge will also increase £1 to £4 a month.

I'm tempted to 'downgrade' to BT Lite to get BT Sport 1 only for free. However, as a football fan, I'll get access to the Premier League but I'll lose the FA Cup as this will be on BT Sport 2.

When completing the order to downgrade it wanted to start me on a new contract. Very poor behaviour on BT's part.

It gave you the option of entering a new 12 month contract, and you could select yes or no. I chose no.

One of the reasons that I went with BT for my Broadband/phone package was the free BT Sport (BT Sport 1, 2 and ESPN) as I am a keen rugby fan and BT Sport shows a lot of rugby.. I have just been informed that from 1st August these 3 channels will no longer be free but that BT Europe will be added and I will have to pay £5 per month. I have told BT that I wish to cancel my broadband/phone package and they have replied that I will be charged a cancellation fee.
Are they within their rights to do this? Does this change (from free BT Sport to chargeable BT Sport) not constitute a significant contract change that should thereby allow me to cancel my contract at no cost?

See the BT Sport Fiver a Month thread .
I am in the same boat as regards RU .
Might well be time for an Android box if BT are going to push my package higher .

It refused to complete when I selected no. Even if not why would they be trying to get customers to start a new contract? I know! A sneaky way of tying them in for longer.
