Apple Pay

Today I've used Apple Pay 14 times on TfL - 10 DLR card readers, 2 Tube barriers and 2 DLR ticket inspections. It works perfectly. There are two methods:
    1. Hold your iPhone near a card reader and touch your fingerprint when it lights up
    2. Go into Passbook, pre-authenticate an imminent transaction with your fingerprint, then hold your iPhone near a card reader

To be honest - and I admit I don't go to London very frequently - the above both sounds more time consuming than my slapping my oyster card down on the yellow card reader pads - which must take all of 1 second if that on the tubes before the barriers open.

Same thing happened when the BBC tried to use it
That seemed to be a problem with American Express rather than with Apple Pay. It seemed that because the retailer had only recently started taking Amex, they were set up for Visa's PayWave and MasterCard's PayPass, but not yet for American Express's ExpressPay.

Oyster is more expensive if you travel throughout the week. Contactless payments (including Apple Pay) are capped at the cost of a weekly travelcard. But removing one's wallet from one's pocket or one's purse from one's handbag, then removing a card from one's wallet or purse, touching it on a card reader and putting it back into one's wallet or purse and then back into one's pocket or handbag is a relatively clumsy procedure that requires two hands. On the other hand, Apple Pay can be used with only one hand. This is particularly relevant on TfL. In the common scenario where one hand is already carrying something, then getting out one's contactless card can be very awkward and can hold up other passengers behind. Many Tube passengers are already holding their iPhones as they go up escalators to exit stations, not least because of the Tube's free wifi. Therefore touching one's iPhone on a yellow card reader at the ticket barriers is an effortless process.

The same principle applies when ordering drinks at a bar. Many people use their iPhones while standing at the bar waiting to be served. Having to put away one's iPhone and get out one's wallet or purse, then get the card out of the wallet or purse, touch it on a card reader and put everything away again is inevitably more time consuming and clumsy than simply using the device already in one's hand.

When I'm out, my phone lives in my handbag or pocket(s) depending on what I'm wearing, along with my Oyster etc so getting one out instead of the other would make absolutely no difference :p

Edit: just to be clear, I have nothing against Apple Pay and similar, but I don't really have a use for it and I just hope I don't get caught up too often behind people who cause delays trying to get it to work
Now free from the incompetence of vodafail

I cannot get Apple Pay to work.

I have managed to add onto the Watch app on the iPhone 6 and I get asked for a verification, OK. Card registered. Appears on watch, great.

However no joy on the iPhone 6 standalone app ...

When I try the main Passbook app to use the iPhone 6 for Apple Pay, I get to the verification code part which is received from Nationwide, but there is nowhere to key it in.

If I click on the Nationwide card I get

(!) THIS CARD CANNOT BE USED
Remove this card and try adding it again
    [Remove Card]

Tried with a Santander card too. Again a text message but nowhere to put it! Again added to the watch app, no problem.

I guess its obvious but I haven't got a clue what I need to do to verify on the iphone 6, can anyone help?

Sorry if I'm telling you the obvious, but when you select the card on the phone there's an (i) in the bottom right. It's via that that you access the option to enter the code, along with all the other options and details. If you've tried that already I'm out of ideas...

When I click on the card picture I get ...

(!) THIS CARD CANNOT BE USED
Remove this card and try adding it again
    [Remove Card]

When I then press (i) in bottom right (it doesn't appear before this point) I get a different screen but nowhere to input a code, probably due to the message above.

    Choices are

    Contact Nationwide
    Privacy Policy
    Terms and Conditions
    Remove Card

That's it, nowhere to enter a code.

Ah. When I add a card, just after it's been added a button appears under the card with 'verify' or something like that. Anyway, it's impossible to miss so it does sound like you've got a glitch. Sorry I can't be more help. I hope someone else can help get it sorted.

Tried that, also tried Santander and Nationwide, same problem for 2 different providers.

No problems with the Watch app (on the iPhone 6) though.

Maybe a problem at Apple's end, will try again tomorrow.
