All mobile contactless transactions are authorised online - Visa, MasterCard and AmEx all mandate it with the exception of Amex who allow it only if the retailer is unable to authorise the transaction online.

The retailer floor limit doesn't matter, if the card or device requests the terminal to go online, it must do so or decline the transaction.

Rules are made to be broken:
You can now use Apple Pay to pay as you go on Tube, bus, tram, DLR, London Overground, TfL Rail and most National Rail services in London.

Surely payments made on a bus aren't authorised online?

TfL also appears to have opted out of the need to PIN verify contactless transactions from time to time.

Apparently, "One in ten contactless transactions in the UK are made on TfL's network, making TfL one of the largest contactless merchants worldwide".

The card industry is very eager for us to dump cash and go contactless. I guess they'll bend over backwards for TfL.

Similarly my AmEx cards via ApplePay have worked fine in Pret and Weatherspoons in central london
The Crosse Keys, I assume? I went to the Wetherspoons in Canary Wharf, as it seemed like an obvious place to try Apple Pay on the launch day. Wetherspoons have really been leading the way in contactless payments. It speeds up the whole process of buying a round. Fees to retailers are very low for accepting contactless payments, so there's no excuse for other pubs and bars not to follow suit.

Good point. Nor are ticket inspections on the DLR. TfL only finds out at the end of the day whether you had touched in at the beginning of your journey and whether the ticket inspection passed or failed.

Its not possible to enter anything on the oyster scanner, and I'm not sure you can use contactless on the ticket machines. It would be pointless as you can use the contactless card as a ticket.

If you're on iOS 8.4 you wouldn't need a software update; Apple amended a JSON file (from what I read on another forum) to enable Apple Pay here in the UK.

I assume you've tried a soft reset of the phone and closed Settings from the 'recent apps' screen?

EDIT: Soft Reset and Hard Reset has still not solved this problem.

    The first pitfall appears.
Make sure you have enough battery

Your iPhone or Apple Watch must be switched on to use it to travel. You should also check that you have enough battery on your iPhone or Apple Watch to complete your journey. If you don't and:

It runs out of battery in the middle of a rail journey, you will not be able to touch out at the end and could be charged a maximum fare
If an inspector asks you to touch your iPhone or Apple Watch on their reader, it will not be able to be read and you could be liable for a penalty fare

If your battery runs out on TfL, then you can simply touch out (and do any ticket inspections) with the corresponding physical card. You will then be charged two maximum fares because the physical card and Apple Pay are seen as two separate payment methods. But you can then phone TfL and ask them to resolve it, as they will see that the two maximum fares are charged to cards registered on your TfL account.

You would know at the beginning of a journey that your battery would be likely to run out. I think this is all a bit academic.

I'm all set up on Apple Pay with RBS. I have a full service bank accout with them (Select Platinum) and apple pay seems to work fine with most retailers, however I have a couple of questions.
    1. When I use ApplePay the money comes off my available funds straight away (which is different to normal contact less? Anyone else noticed this?
    2. I tried to use ApplePay in B&M today and the transaction was declined twice. I then used my contact less card to make the payment. The transaction was authorised and the amount has come off my available funds straight away. Very unusual for contact less transactions.

Funds have always come off my RBS account.

    From the available balance.

Thanks Paul_1977. Even for contact less payments?
