Arrrgghhh, won't activate on my desktop, an old Viglen with Win7, genuine Win7 install CoA sticker worn away.

I'd hate to stoop to a hack to get it going.
I suspect the activation servers are a tad busy today. I've seen it suggested elsewhere that you should just keep hitting the Activate button.

Or leave it until the morning.

this is a joke , my original d/load took about 15 mins (talk talk fibre) , I did NOT run it , I then d/loaded the iso and tool and installed , then wiped it out and did a complete new re install

about 30 mins for a install

Thanks, I gather that not activating isn't a problem its when it says that Windows is not genuine is when there is an issue.

ok as posted on a previous page , I have had the "not genuine" situation today , and solved it.

the update , is for the machine its updating , if you copy the files or download the "tool" , when it expands , it collects the serial number of the machine its working on

Microsoft are doing this to stop you selling multiple copies on pendrives etc.

to get past the "not genuine" you have to run a small 3 line entry in command prompt , , I have explained this about 3 times

Thanks for the thought but it is stuck with the blue ring surrounding the 92% bit, stuck at configuring which has been at 68% for half an hour and has just moved to the lofty heights of 69%. The blue ring fades in and out so something is working just mightily slow. Its the keypad that;s not working yet so there's nothing I cad do yet, at this rate it'll be finished in time for breccy. Hooray for the old XP box.
Finished at last, when installed don't be surprised if its slow, it still downloads stuff and installs it.
Just on 5 hours, glad I did not wait to do it later

After 12.5 hours I have Windows 10. I see Java does not work with Windows 10.

I take it you mean the plug in for the edge browser (ie replacement) ?

It doesn't support plug-ins so you have to use IE or firefox, chrome no longer supports the plug-in. Java local works fine, it's just the plugin.

Unless you have a really special reason to have a Java plugin in your browser I'd suggest not using it as it's a security weakness that is often a target for malware.
Science isn't exact, it's only confidence within limits.
  • To Fightsback, thank you. I do not really need Java. I will un install it.

A quickie for anyone who has installed - will Office Starter 2010 work once W10 is installed ?

Same question. I may have upgraded by some time this evening, so check back.
I couldn't see an answer to your questions anywhere, apologies if I missed it.
Office 2007 is working fine on both my laptop and desktop with W10. So, I'm sure the OS2010 should also work OK.

Sounds like you didn't have the latest version of Norton installed. They released Win 10 compliant versions of Norton 360 and Internet Security a few weeks back, but bizarrely it didn't update automatically for me ... it was sheer fluke that I clicked on 'Look for new version' and found it.

Thanks for that. I did see that pop up and completely ignored it! Whoops!
