win 10 (clean install) actually takes up a lot less space than win 7/8

after you upgrade , you will get the chance to remove your win 7/8 files , thus getting your space back

So assuming that Windows 10 installs on a partition that looks to be about 12GB and I can delete my remaining Win 8 files, does that mean that I can make this partition slightly smaller and thus gain some space for files?

I've transferred a couple of programs to my SD card. Not sure if I should transfer Office as it might be too slow. I've also transferred Dropbox, but it has my thesis files that I can't slow, so I might transfer it back. I'm worried the SD card will be ejected (it's currently mounted), or fail, and then I'd lose everything (well, it's backed up online through Dropbox, but I like a copy on my hard drive!).

    Thanks

I looked up the specs of your machine. With a small HD like you have. The first thing I would do is disable hibernation.
robs huge amounts of space. however you have the connected standby feature.
I wonder if this uses the same level of hard drive space(though I can see its a great feature)

Is there going to be a deluge of Windows 10 downloads tomorrow? Will there be some sort of phased rollout?

Do we have to delete/format Windows 7 ?
I will lose all my programs.

Or will it just overwrite the existing Windows ?
    Please let me know.

    Many thanks

I'm not too bothered about connected standby, but the sleep function is amazing. The laptop is light enough to take everywhere, and I can just open it and it's instantly on, no time at all to reboot.

I just use it to write primarily, so the fact that it is lightweight in terms of weight is important.

Expect breakage and bugs, it's a new OS release and it always happens as not every permutation is considered. Personally I never do upgrades, always a clean install as you run into less problems.

    Update:

Here a bit of info on forced updates (possible work around) and the fact that W10 has system restore turned off by default:
