Elsien, this is an example of a cocktail dress, retro style. They can be shorter or a wee bit longer, but I would say that a cocktail dress isn't full-length. I think full-length might be a bit too formal for this type of occasion, especially if it's daytime.

If it's a day-time do, then the dress wouldn't have to be too glitzy or elaborate. An outfit you'd wear to a wedding would probably do. If it's an evening do, then silky/satins or a touch of voile or sequins would be nice, but not too over the top.

You could even have a dressy two piece.....matching top and skirt/flowing trousers.

Main thing is that it's an outfit, with accessories to complement, etc.

Also, do look in charity shops!

I've recently bought two evening dresses and a couple of cocktail-type dresses (for AmDram) in charity shops, got all four for about £35!
A good idea if you don't think you'll wear it again!

Hugs and squishes to all the lurkers out there - especially for putting up with all our gossip on such a variety of subjects! (Although this might be good in a way. It's a bit like brushing up against real life, hearing so many conversations going on. Or a cocktail party, for that matter!)

Elsien, if you're a very individual shape, I would definitely go for a LBD which is as neutral as possible and invest in getting it altered. I didn't say, but I was thinking that the two I suggested could be accessorised in lots of different ways (coloured tights and beads came to mind this year) so would probably last you a decade or so without being too obviously the same dress.......

georgiegirl - love the blue one but I wouldn't wear bare shoulders to a formal do, so it would need a shrug or something. And I think midlength is slightly more formal (even though personally I wear calf or longer length dresses every day!)

Lovely sunny weather this morning, today would be a lovely day to be OUTSIDE! Hint hint... (Not sure escapee can read yet though)

Bearded one was shining a torch at my nether regions last night telling her to head towards the light.

Got a friend visiting this morning, I'm excited!

  • Oooh, what did you buy, code?

I really want a slow cooker, Birdie! I am jealous!

My lovely teacher friend has just insisted that he pays for my carer for the extra day. He says he won't take no for an answer and if I refuse I leave him no choice but to drive down weekly to do my physio with me and I wouldn't want an old man having to do that, would I? That's so sweet of him, he really does look after me.

Why do you have to pay for your physio?

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton

I think WaS is allocated only so many, so any extra, she has to fund herself. (I could be wrong though!)
