At present, parking in the UK is generally by pay and display. Make it free everywhere, not just in Scotland.

Apologies if duplicate idea, but how are we supposed to find them? Tried searching, and there were hundreds of hits across all forums.
  • Charge people £10 -£20 per week for food when staying in hospital

This is a minimal amount and your food at home would probably cost more than this, which you would be paying for anyway, so why does it have to be 'free' in hospital? Hospital food could then be radically improved and money saved ploughed back into patient care.

Bring back nurses training on the job. Since university became the compulsory form of entry to nursing, numbers have plummeted. Nursing is a wonderful career but caring and compassion are not something which can be learned at Uni. You either have it or you don't. It's OK for our P.M. to say there will be more doctors and nurses but without the places to train (which have been cut again and again over the years) how is he intending to fill the gaps?
Lets go back to the old ways which kept our hospitals fully staffed.

Car Insurance: since this is a legal requirement why not set up a government controlled insurance provider so the population receive the profits - also will stop the haggling nonsense that goes on.
  • Reduce Open University fees.
It was set up so everyone could learn at any age and while working, but is now too expensive to allow people to study for their own interest or to keep their brain active.

The present rules are far too complex and allow many of the well breeched to get away with paying little or no tax. I still recall the hard task of trying to get them into my head when studying for accountancy exams and little has changed. I would drive a coach and horses through the whole pantomime with just one rule:- If you live anywhere in the UK for three months or more, you pay income tax, subject only to double taxation agreements on the income which you have received in that three months (or longer). This should apply to corporations as well as individuals.

Instead of each new government focusing on making their mark during their time in power, major policies should seek sign up from major parties and be planned over longer periods. The cost of changing policies every time the government changes must be huge. Other countries can make this work, so why not us? There may be minor tweaks made but scrapping a policy that another gov has put in place just for political reasons is massively wasteful if not based on sound independent evidence that it is a failed policy and there is a better alternative. This change could save the country and the tax payer hugely. Along with this goes random changes to names/ gov machinery. Immigration was covered by the Home office, then the Border and Immigration Agency, then the UK Border Agency, last time I went thro the airport it said something like UK Border Force - how much does all this re-branding cost us and what does it achieve??
  • I believe this was discontinued in the 1980s, do you remember MIRAS? A little financial help for those struggling to keep a roof over their heads without depending on social housing.
  • It seems that those of us that live alone and work hard are relied upon to finance the rest of society's benefits, through council tax, income tax and national insurance. All we are entitled to is 25% reduction on our council tax. Or, to put it another way, if four people lived in the house, they'd only have to pay 25% more than someone living on their own.
To make this a more fair society I believe every individual should pay a local authority tax, rather than it based on the property. I other words - a poll tax. This would mean that each person would pay their fair share towards their community and services.

Zero rate e-books VAT. It is nonsense to pay 0% VAT on paper books but 20% VAT on e-books when e-books use 95% less resources/carbon.
