Thanks so much to all who answered my question. I did not realise that I would be paying for the insurance over the 15 years of the loan and I was not told I could get shop around for my own insurance. I thought it strange that they offered a "goodwill gesture" if they were 100% convinced I didn't have a case. So I am going to take your advice and go to the FOS. Do I have to write to First Plus to tell them I am not accepting their offer? Thanks again.
yes tell them you are not happy with the reply and ask them to reconsider or you will go to fos, first plus are the worst with these claims, please go with this to the bitter end, you are not alone with fp, they need teaching a lesson

Sorry haven't a copy but just wrote along the lines of "wondering if you could help, been waiting for months for Picture to be declared in default, getting no information or timescale from FSCS, there are 600 complaints, people are close to being reposessed, just would like to be kept informed not fobbed off with standard email" Got a reply saying he didnt think it was satisfactory and then forwarded my letter to the FSCS with a cover letter asking for them to reply to him and explain what was happening. They have probably now put my claim to the back of the queue!

I would just write to Firstplus and ask them for their final response and tell them there is no way that you are accepting their offer. Also add the other reasons to your complaint maybe and don't give them longer than 8 weeks from your first complaint letter before going to the FOS otherwise they will no doubt drag this out.

I wish you luck although I have a good feeling you will win.

in my opinion you should wait and dont cancel yet, if you win mis sell you will get all ppi payments back you have made to date. plus 8% interest and ppi taken off the loan. then they will redo the loan over the remaining loan term at the same interest. if you cancel and redo now you will not get much benefit and you may end up paying more than you are now, at the end of the day it is up to you. but please think about this

Thanks for this amersall - I'll wait and just concentrate on getting the money back!

09/06/09 ETA: Cheque received in the post today!

    SUCCESS :j

Reclaimed PPI from a Debenhams Mastercard
Amount Received - £213.89 (cheque due in 7-10 days, I'll update when I receive it)
One letter sent (using template in Martin's article) using 1st class stamp

Got the debenhams card when I was a student, so the PPI was worthless anyway. However when I checked the agreement, I never even ticked the box for the PPI!!! Anyway sent the letter with both complaints, 5 days later received the reply they are refunding premiums of £189.57, and interest of £10.32, together with a goodwill 'loss of cash' payment of £14, so £213.89 all together :T I'm happy with this, the amount of the premiums is about right (I have a couple of statements missing so can't check exactly but I've guessed it from the other months and came up with £190), so the interest is just a bonus.

Thanks to Martin and all the others on the site who provide us with the info and templates etc.Once the cheque is cleared its another nice bite off my debts!
    Scary number... 30/5/09 £18,905.08
    08/01/11 £3905.02
    Virgin [STRIKE]£4770.48[/STRIKE] £0 Mint [STRIKE]£5281.21[/STRIKE] £0 Barclaycard [STRIKE]£3301.68[/STRIKE]£3905.02
