Barbeque ideas please!

Just a thought, if you have never BBQ'd before, make sure you have plenty of charcoal and light it in plenty of time it takes at least half an hour before it is hot enough to cook. The coals should be white before you start to cook.
Also if you there is a lot of food to BBQ you can start it in under the grill and transfer to the BBQ for the final cooking thus getting the authentic BBQ taste in a shorter time.0 -
Not very money-saving but for an extra special BBQ I do salmon fillets (wrap in foil with a slice of lemon) served with potato salad, chicken satay sticks (always go down well), veggie kebabs (like mandyc's!) and marinated lamb kebabs (serve with the roasted veggies in a pitta  !)0

There was a thread on a few days ago about how to disjoint a whole chicken and someone posted a link which was a BarBQue chicken step by step guide. You can get 2 chickens for £4 in Asda, disjoint them and marinade them the night before and that would give you loads of meat! All you'd really need is some sausages and made some veg on skewers - these can also be prepared day before and marinated (Asda Smart price box of mushrooms and bag of peppers is what we always use!).
I always serve rolls or french sticks, salad or coleslaw (as others said dont go overboard just one or other is enough), carrot and celery sticks and some dips as well (these get munched while waiting for the barbeque).Me debt free thanks to MSE :T0 -
Someone sent me the following recently. It amused me!
BBQs The Routine
After 4 long months of cold and winter, we are finally coming up to summer and BBQ season. Therefore it is important to refresh your memory on the etiquette of this sublime outdoor cooking, as it's the only type of cooking a real man will do, probably because there is an element of danger involved.
When a man volunteers to do the BBQ the following chain of events are put into motion:
Routine...
1) The woman buys the food.
2) The woman makes the salad, prepares the vegetables, and makes dessert.
3) The woman prepares the meat for cooking, places it on a tray along with the necessary cooking utensils and sauces, and takes it to the man who is lounging beside the grill - beer in hand.
Here comes the important part:
4) THE MAN PLACES THE MEAT ON THE GRILL.
More routine....
5) The woman goes inside to organise the plates and cutlery.
6) The woman comes out to tell the man that the meat is burning. He thanks her and asks if she will bring another beer while he deals with the situation.
Important again:
7) THE MAN TAKES THE MEAT OFF THE GRILL AND HANDS IT TO THE WOMAN.
More routine.....
8) The woman prepares the plates, salad, bread, utensils, napkins, and sauces and brings them to the table.
9) After eating, the woman clears the table and does the dishes. And most important of all:
10) Everyone PRAISES the MAN and THANKS HIM for his cooking efforts.
11) The man asks the woman how she enjoyed "her night off."
And, upon seeing her annoyed reaction, concludes that there's just no pleasing some women...

DopeyDora - that is brilliant!
Home made burgers are great - Mince, Garlic, Herbs, Worcester Sauce, S&P, Egg to bind together - you'll never eat a shop bought burder again!
You could do a honey & mustard (and olive oil) marinade for your chicken.
Sausages - maybe pre-cook in oven to get them cooked through.
You could do a Lamb kleftiko (probably have to google a recipe), but you can wrap each one in a foil parcel, although they will need a while to cook. Delish!
Veg kebabs are great - cherry toms, pepper, shallot or 1/4 of a small onion, courgette, mushroom - baste with oil to stop burning.
Potato salad. Cous cous salad ala Jamie Oliver.
Homemade rolls.
Homemade coleslaw. Pasta salad.
Hmmm. I'm starving now!"No matter how little money and how few possesions you own, having a dog makes you rich." - Louis Sabin0 -

Home made burgers are fab - I don't even use an egg I just put in chopped onion herbs and a bit of ketchup - squash them into balls and flatten them and them the chill in the fridge while the barbecue is lighting. Cook for about 20 minutes depending on how thick - poke a skewer in the middle to see if cooked - if still red not cooked.- use hot part of bbq and turn about 4 times.
Another similar easy thing to do is lamb kofta's - minced lamb, yogurt and dried mint. stick it all in a bowl mix it up and squeeze it along some kebab sticks that have been soaked - lovely with warmed pittas. Take about 10 to 15 minutes. Hot part of bbq and turn about 4 times
I always do cous cous, big bowl of cous cous pour over some boiling water, and cover, after 10 mins fork through and add peppers herbs and I use either lemon juice and garlic salt or sweet chilli dipping sauce for flavour.
For veggies stuffed peppers are nice and be made up the day before - wilt a bag of spinach in some garlic and oil in a saucepan, add some pine nuts or sunflower seeds, then add either chooped baby tomatoes or sundried/sunblushed tomatoes. Scoop out the peppers reserving the tops and spoon in the mixture add chopped mozerralla in between each spoon. Pop the tops on and cover in foil, these will keep in the fridge overnight and take about 25 minutes on a bbq - you can use large (beef) tomatoes but I think peppers hold their shape better and are easier to cook. Place on the cooler part of the BBq (usually the edge or top shelf.
I also do a huge bowl of punch so hopefully if the food is rubbish they will be too drunk to notice lol!
Can't tell you how to light it as ours is dead easy - gas!
Hope it goes well:DMurphy's No More Pies Member No. 28 on hold0 -
We really like to have pesto pasta salad with our BBQs. It consists of:
Ingredients:
Pasta bows (farfalle)
Feta
Sun-dried tomatoes
Black olives
For the dressing:
Olive oil
Pesto
White vinegar
Can't remember the quantities. We just tend to guess and taste as we go along.
Instructions:
1. Cook the pasta until al dente. Drain and rinse in cold water.
2. Chop up the feta, sun-dried tomatoes and olives, to whatever size you want.
3. Mix the dressing. Use half the quantity of white wine vinegar compared to olive oil and pesto.
4. Mix the whole together.
You can make this in advance and if you have any left over it does nicely for lunches.
We make our own burgers too. Not necessarily cheaper but definitely less fat. We used to use egg to bind it all together but now just use breadcrumbs and it seems to work fine.0
