Hair Dying help + money saving?

Hi All
Was wondering whether anyone has successfully managed to dye their own hair back to brown having previously had hair dyed blonde?
Currently I use nice & easy hair no 98 to top up my roots as it has been so long since I've been able to afford to get back to the hairdressers. I thought that if I just went back to my "natural" colour it would be easier to maintain (and obviously cheaper than trying to find the money for continued high/low lights which I used to get done).
Thanks

Yeah I've successfully dyed my hair back to it's "natural" colour from blonde. Make sure you get a colour which dosen't have red in it.
I was advised to use a colour ehancing shampoo or a wash in wash out colour first before putting the permanent dye on. Using a wash in wash out colour gives the hair shaft a pigment which the dye can attach to.
Obviously, doing any hair/beauty changes at home has risks, so be prepared. I would pay a hairdresser to do it if you can afford it.0 -
Ahh now ... I thought I was supposed to choose one WITH red in it so thanks for that. :T
I am still trying to hold out and get the hairdressers to do it first and then just maintain the upkeep afterwards.
Thanks again xOfficial DMP Member No ... wait for it ... 180!!!Sealed Pot Challenge 2009 #397:jSuccessfully reclaimed Abbey bank charges under hardship criteria 22/05/09:j0 -
I had my hair 'bleached blonde' for years and got so fed up with having to keep doing it. I used L'Oreal Couleur Experte a bit pricy but i found the shade i wanted in this. My natural colour is dark blonde and this worked brilliantly (better than i expected!) It now is near enough my natural colour again . I didnt put anything on my hair beforehand i just used that.0

i only had highlights to get rid of, but i used a semi permanent dye, just in case it all went horribly wrong! managed to get a reasonable match, then a couple of months later did another one, with a slightly different colour that seemed to match better. after that, it just stayed there until now i'm not sure where my real colour ends! i used garnier nutrisse which was great - although i only picked it as it had the biggest selection of browns where i went to buy the dye, it wasn't a particularly informed choice, but luckily was ok! now life without highlights is just so much cheaper!:happyhear0

Just wondering if anyone can help me. I currently have highlighted hair - a mix of light blonde, dark blonde and light brown (my natural colour is dark blonde/mousy/light brown) but am not so keen on the amount of money I fork out having it done every month.
It would be a lot more budget friendly to just colour my hair at home but I'm a bit worried about doing this over the highlights and maybe getting a dodgy colour! Has anyone done this, do you know it it would work ok, or am I likely to get some random green/ginger/multicoloured mess? I am thinking of one of those multi tonal thingees I've seen advertised.
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks in advance0 -

thanks for that, I've had a look at that thread. Just quickly though, did you put a darker colour over the highlights? Just cause I want to do a lightish blonde over and thats why I'm a bit worried, ie dont want my natural colour.
Cheers :-)0 -
If its a blonde hair dye then go for it!
I dye my hair with a home dye from boots and also do my own highlights so it'll be fine BUT I once put a reddish hair day over my hightlights and they turned pink so be aware never to put anything darker over them as if it has reddish stuff in it it could all go pear shaped!
Good luck
