I never do a patch test. The thing is that the dyes I have bought recently have been mix-yourself ones and they all say on the packaging that they must not be kept. I've heard about these things blowing up if they are kept as they expand in the bottle so how would you do a patch test? Even if you use the two creams for the test they will react differently than they would if you had mixed them?
You mix a very tiny amount of each one together in a small container, they generally have the same amount in each wotsit - normally 30-40ml I think...but no, I never do a patch test.0 -

I didn't have to mix the solutions together. It advised me just to apply a small amount of the creme colourant (which is the colour tube). I didn't have to open the developer tube.0 -
I've been home dyeing my hair on and off since the '60s and have never done a patch test and never had any problems. I've also had it dyed at the hairdressers lots of times since the late '50s and they've never done a patch test either..................
....I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

i've been dying my hair black for 6 years. i've been trying to get it back to dark brown for the last two years with little success. none of the shop bought dyes have worked and i went to one salon who charged me 35 quid to put some chocolate highlights in it, but they didn't show up.
so, yesterday, i went to another salon. there, they put in a whole head of foils to strip out the black. that left me with red highlights (which would have looked lovely if my root regrowth hadn't gone blonde with it!) and so i had a chocolate toner put through it, too. with a cut and finish, it cost me 100 quid.
but for the first time in 6 years, my hair is back to its natural brown and in fantastic condition.
YWG, it may be that just lightening it will be enough to get a nice red. i've seen a few in the shops, if you really can't afford a hairdresser, that claim to lighten dark hair and add red. i think it's the Live range by schwarzkopf. i saw them in Wilko's for about a fiver.0 -

Yeah its the 'Live' range by schwarzkopf i usually use when i dye my hair all over black - and the dye is good and leaves my hair silky so i think when i have some spare cash I'll go with their range again but for a red dye this time.
Only thing is, i'm not sure what ligthener to use? Any ideas?:heartsmil Proud Weight Watcher :heartsmilStart Weight: 15st 13lb Current Weight: 10st 5lbTotal Loss to Date: 5st 8lb- - -Current 2011 Goal: Lose 8lb by 25th DecemberLoss This Week: -3 Total Loss 2011: -30 -
God, how i relate to the OP!
I'm Asian with jet black hair. No colour takes to my hair. However, once I had dark pink in my hair-took hairdresser two whole days (she came to my house). She bleached my hair until it was white (i kid you not) and then put the colour on top. It was a mission.
I would love to bleach the edge of my hair with the same bleach and put a pink on top but have no idea what she used-what strength bleach-can anyone recommend? Also to the OP, how did you put the bleach on to your edges and get it aligned so it was all level?
I have also heard about the dye you put straight on to dark hair without bleaching first-have heard some good stuff about it. I once used some dye from the market which was run by an Afro-Caribbean lady and that stuff was pretty good as it was specifically for dark hair-cant remember what it was tho-sorry. In Manchester, we have quite good markets with afro-Caribbean products-maybe you could look into this?
I wouldn't recommend Henna-well real Henna that is-it turns your hair orange. Have also tried this on my hair but to no avail-colour doesnt show but white bits turned orange-not a good look.
Just had a suggestion-you could go to the Asian hairdressers as they will be used to this problem/issue?

My mum did the pink ends for me. She has a good eye (well, used to) for straightness when it came to hair - wouldnt trust her doing it now though seeing as her eyesight is now worse than mine :rotfl:
Thanks for the advice about going to an asian hairdressers - i may go into manchester and see if i can get any help there:heartsmil Proud Weight Watcher :heartsmilStart Weight: 15st 13lb Current Weight: 10st 5lbTotal Loss to Date: 5st 8lb- - -Current 2011 Goal: Lose 8lb by 25th DecemberLoss This Week: -3 Total Loss 2011: -30 -
** Please move me if I am in the wrong place - thanks ****
I really fancied some highlights but the hairdressers prices are a bit steep (about £80 - £100). I have paid for a good haircut but just can't afford highlights. (I have mousey hair with a fair whack of grey which I try to hide with home hair dye).
Anyway, went to Tesco yesterday & got a kit - PolyColor Effects - for £2.99 What a bargain!!!! So chuffed it doesn't look bad at all.0 -
I used to have my hair highlighted at hairdressers for about £50 (when I worked full time in office) but decided I could no longer afford this so now dd puts a colour on roots £5.99 and use these highlightling kits £4.99 and just dab it around the front and sides and it looks just as good. My hair colour fades quickly in summer as I play so much bowls so not worth paying all that cash.0
