Not that I want to interfere in your discussion ... but could it be like SW where fruit is generally free but pureed/cooked/canned fruit isn't? I never understood why a banana was free food but if I mashed it up with a fork before i ate it it turned into a syn. If I mashed it with my teeth inside my mouth it was still free. I did wonder what happened if I mashed it with my teeth then spat it out  ... but it was too gross (and confrontational!) to ask in a meeting. But I thought you'd probably know, ajax. Or someone would.

...the SW explanation is that you don't get the fibrous benefits of the raw fruit when you puree/juice fruit. All the fructose, none of the fibre. SW is out there for the boffins, way too clever for the likes of me - there are such a huge load of things taken into account when calculating syns that it's a job for someone else to be honest.

WW is a bit different though. All any calculation ever wants to know are two components from the nutritional breakdown - the calories and the sat. fat. The whole points system is based around these, I'm told, and certainly they are the only things requested by the electronic calculator they sell you.

I'd have quite happily sat there and watched you gob out a mashed banana at a meeting - especially in the quest for an explanation :).

BTW.... "interfering"??? It's a forum, and I want as many answers as possible. I need to understand.

Asked my SW leader the very same question, but not in front of others. Turns out that technically, if you mash you single banana on your toast or whatever, then yes it is free. But SW experience is that people who puree/ mash fruit often do quite a bit together and it's that that turns it in to syns. Although fruit is free, you shouldn't have bucket load of the stuff and also, doing some stuff to it, like juicing, takes out the roughage so it loses it extra good for you value. SW find it is easier not to confuse people by sticking to the 'don't mess with your fruit rule' or, like the tinned macaroni cheese debacle, folks start abusing it.
    Does this ramble make sense?

.....makes perfect sense to me Bb, and backs up what I'd heard and repeated above too. Can you tell me more about the tinned macaroni cheese please, I'm not familiar?

Ahhh, the great tinned mac cheese episode. Apparently, tinned Mac cheese used to be a free food, but they discovers members abusing this by liquidising it and using it as a 'free' cheese sauce rather too often and then not understanding why they weren't losing weight  .

Well, pedometer seems to have survived it's unexpected bath and is working fine. 14714 steps today so average still hanging in at almost 12000

Bad today though - had a BBQ and ate far too much as usual, along with 2 large glasses red wine!

    (hangs head in shame....)

.. don't get me wrong, I have no opinion on the matter. I count the 1.5 just to be on the safe side. It makes sense to me that they'd be free except:

    - on a plan that is concerned only with a ratio between calories and saturated fat, why do they abandon that when they feel like it?

It's quite possible that for ease of use they only concern their members with the ratio between cals and sat fat. I find it difficult to understand why you easily accepted that potato/pasta/rice was free on green on SW and not a tin of tomatos on WW.... the principle is the same.

    - how can the food itself be 'wrong'?
In what respect to you mean "wrong"? As in the food label? Maybe it's because tinned tomato doesn't have any sat fat? Perhaps WW didn't point the tinned tomatoes because it's highly unlikely that anyone would binge on them (unlike tinned macaroni cheese) and preferred to encourage healthy eating guidelines such as "5 a day" instead?

    - if tomatoes are 'wrong' and WW are right, what other foods are naturally 'wrong'?
Why don't you try pointing them out for yourself and see. I find it difficult that you have such problems with 1.5 points on a tin of tomatos when you happily ignore their guidelines on the amount of alcohol and sugary food to be consumed in a week (14 - I'm sure you've noticed that in your OH's book by now). What I do know is, if WW decide at some point in the near future that tinned tomato should be counted, I'll be over there to give you what you deserve for spoiling it for the rest of us.:p

... I'd be far more interested in how your leader answers those three questions than gives a glib "they're free cos they are" response. Those questions are the real issue, not the points values of the humble tomato.

WW leaders are chosen because of their ability to empathise and support their members - they've already lost weight with WW. I think that it's possible that they're not given the answers to your questions because most members wouldn't question the program to the extent that you have. That doesn't mean that they don't have the ability to answer your questions.

Genuinely not trying to be awkward, but if the science is right then the science is right.
Sometimes it's possible to be too intelligent Ajax:p

End of. I don't like it when science gets abandoned with no sensible reason

I doubt very much that a worldwide organisation like WW would unleash a program on their unsuspecting members without first making sure that the science is correct, again, perhaps they didn't expect such questions from their members. Why don't you skip the middle person as such and contact WW yourself and ask them your questions.

Again, I'm not answering your questions like this to be cheeky/argumentative or awkward.... You've given me the reasons for your questions... I just don't understand how you could accept SW's rules so easily and question a tin of tomatos on WW.

  • Right - enough of all that, down to more important matters....

I stayed sober last night and drove to and from by brother's house.

    Where's my cyber hug Ajaxlove0004.gif

Unfortunately, staying sober didn't stop me from eating far too much. Brother's partner put on a spread for 50 people. (there was 20 of us there). I managed to avoid the cheese and crackers but couldn't resist the desserts. This is what I really hate about my family, instead of having loads of one dessert (that I could have a portion and leave the rest alone) they have to have loads of small desserts (which means that I want a piece of each) M&S toffee and pecan roulade, cheesecake, banoffee and profiteroles (sp).Thank goodness there were no egg and onion sandwiches or I'd have been really done for.

I'm absolutely knackered this morning. bore0006.gif my next door neighbours had a party last night and woke me from a sound sleep at 3am. Two of them had a barney that went on for over an hour and a half (until I went in to complain). They still didn't turn the music down until after 5 and DS was up bright and early at 8 am..... sorry if I seem a bit off. I'm just tired.

Poor you Dellybelly: I go spare if my sleep is interupted like that. I usually lie there for a couple of hours mutering darkly and then finally ring the noise complaint unit at the council only to find then engaged for the last hour before they close at 3 a.m. I need my sleep.

Bails: in case I miss you today, have a great time in India. I know you won't beable to to the sort of activity you did there before, but maybe you will see it from a whole new perspective this time and discover a whole other side to India. And of course, through a haze of rose blossom romance  . And you've got us lot here to look forward to when you come back and you'll be able to get started properly on your weight loss prog. Look forward to 'seeing' you back :T .

Suggs: how was the rugby - you weren't too much of a featherweight I hope?

    Welcome 123money. Congratulations on your baby:j , that's really good news:T .
My first thought is that I'm not suprised you are still carrying an extra 2 stone: this seems entirely normal as your body just hasn't had time to recover from the HUGE changes it has been going through. And I'm worried that you are only having one meal a day. You need to give yourself enough fuel to cope with the demands of a new baby, and also your body may go into panic and hang onto the excess fat if it it not getting enough to eat. This isn't meant in a patronising way - we really are a supportive group here:D .
There are a number of newish mums on the site who will chip in in due course. We all do different eating plans: calorie counting, SW,WW Rosemary Conley, or just sensible healthy eating. The key is finding one that suits you and your lifestyle. Stick with us, see what others have to suggest and I'm sure you'll get your pre-pregnancy bod back + the bonus of a gorgeous baby as well.
