  • Really? This is what Xrays were for....
Had to google - yes, it does show on xrays, was worried after your post

Sorry I was worried the x-rays had shown something else up - my understanding is that they can't / don't show cruciate issues (as these are 'soft tissue') but can show the resulting issues that the joint may have which is an indicating that the ligament has ruptured etc

My friends retriever cost not far short of the 3k for her cruciate. Problem was the other leg needed doing the following year.

My friends retriever cost not far short of the 3k for her cruciate. Problem was the other leg needed doing the following year.

It has been found that quite often once one goes, the other will as well.

My schnauzer's went, but due to her age (and her small size!) we didn't operate. It healed well and now she has a barely noticeable limp. However, on a large breed dog surgery is always advised. Hope Zara is feeling better soon.

When Cleo had hers done two years ago at a referal vet it cost just under 2K for them but there were additional charges for earlier xrays by my own vet and a follow up xray.

The referal vet advised that there was a 60 % chance of the other one going. This can be due to an inherent weakness ( which caused the first ine to rupture) which affects both legs, or due the extra strain put on the good leg until the dog recovers fully.

The second reason is why correct rehabilitation is paramount.

I was told the operation is the easy bit, the rehabilitation is the important bit.

Thanks so much everyone for everything xxx

Just got back in from my own hospital appointment, 3 years since my opp and still have 6 monthly check up but all clear so a bit of good news here.. sighhh

Took Zara for a pee before going out in the morning, friend took her out at 12:30 and I took her again when I got back at 5:30.

Absolute murder with the stairs for her and for me.

Luckily the painkillers seem to work - she is on her regular Onsior (1 per day since her hip surgery all the time this is for the spine problem) and Tramadol 100mg three times per day (300mg a day in total).

I am a bit worried that she does not want to eat at all as she should have tramadol with food but hey - she has a bit of cat food with it... at least she is not taking it on empty stomach.

She doe snot even want cheese (philadelphia or cheddar - she normally loves those) so have to give her what I should not as long as she has something with those tablets.

Looking at her as she is - I do not think I could keep her like that till 14th for the op to be done at FR so looks like we will have it done in our regular vets.

The 60% chance of the other leg going bad - yup, heard the same from my vet...

One step at a time :(

All cats are looking after Zara - they must know she is not well, they are so good with her

    Thanks again xxx
  • Wow, can't believe it's 3 years since your op! Chuffed everything's OK

Poor Zara - hate it when they're ill .......

    Will she eat scrambled egg?

Nice and gentle on the tum & might get a little extra into her for the tablets.

It's probably the tramadol that's affecting her appetite. It often makes them feel a bit ill.
She might feel better in a day or two, otherwise a different painkiller might be needed.
