Once a person has a council house I think they can stay as long as they want assuming they behave themselves. I know there was a big fuss a couple of years ago about a union boss earning mega-money and living in a council house. If he could stay I don't see why somebody on 30k couldn't.

Given that these are all high demand, low supply areas, what makes you think you might get a property in any of them?

The social housing allocation policy in England varies from area to area, social housing landlord to social housing landlord.

This is because of the Localism Act of a few years ago which gave social housing landlords more discretion in how they made their rules (so long as they follow some core rules such as how they deal with homeless applications).

This means no-one on this forum can tell you how many landlords will accept your application because each one is slightly different.

That said, social housing is generally under great pressure in the south-east due to high demand and low supply.

Areas with less demand/more supply (though I am probably over simplifying it) are hard to let areas, such as areas of high deprivation/low employment/high crime and harder to let properties, such as high rise flats. Even then, those social housing landlords may still only accept applications from people who have lived or worked in the area, or have close relatives there.

Had you moved to Basildon with your firm, way back in the 1960s, you would have been allocated a house by Basildon New Town Authority - in an area which would be near where you worked, and you would live alongside your fellow workers.

However, now in 2015, you will find the information here about whether you can apply for social housing in Basildon - here :- http://www.basildon.gov.uk/article/5276/Social-Housing-Applications-And-Allocations

those rogues, require us to have been staying in this [Text removed by MSE Forum Team] of the last humongous 7 years!!!! to be able to bid for a council rent!!!! that's ridiculous!!! who has the stomach to stay in this [Text removed by MSE Forum Team] for a whopping whole of 7 years???

besides, by providing priority to people in the area, [Text removed by MSE Forum Team] but they get votes from them, that's why they care for them

is there a council that doesn't have this requirement? or any workaround? I just want to bid in a council flat!

These are the regulations regarding entitlement to bid on a council property in Basildon :- http://www.basildon.gov.uk/CHttpHandler.ashx?id=255&p=0

You may WANT to bid on a council flat, but you may not NEED a council flat.

Suggest you look up the definition of WANT and NEED
