No I do not tip my hairdresser as he owns the salon and as I pay more for the privilege of having one of the directors do my hair and all the profit of the business goes into his pocket he can't be doing too badly. If it was a young hairdresser on minimum wage I probably would but as I already pay £39 for one hours work I consider that enough.

  • I rarely go to the hairdressers (cheaper to cut my own hair!) but when I do, I always tip.

No I dont, they're getting enough of my money as it is.
  • I tip but I'm American so it's drummed in me from an early age :). It's quite weird not tipping and have to be reminded of this by my DH who is a Brit! that tipping is not expected. However, even when in the UK I tend to tip my hairdresser and at some restaurants.

What I don't like is when the tip is already included in the total for parties of 6 or more (usually at 15% or 18%) and then they ask if you want to tip extra. I've only seen this in the US of course.

I agree with what a previous poster said about the percentages for US Tax filings, tips will often show on pay checks so that the government can get its cut.

I never use to be one to tip, not even 10p never thought it was something that I should do, more lack of thought than being mean, then I started working in a job where I started to receive tips it changed my thoughts on tipping, and I have had some nice tips over the year when you are skint and no money its nice to buy a treat for me or my daughter. so if I am in a position to tip and they give a great service I tip.

I do feel bad for people who are not in a position to receive tips, so I either give feedback via site or via manager if I can, although its not always about money, what makes me smile in general is that I enjoy talking to nice people and if you can have a nice conversation thats a tip.

I only tip if someone has provided me with exceptional service. I hardly go to the hairdresser so I don't have a regular salon and therefore don't tip.

No one tips me for my job!

Well exactly. As I said earlier in the thread, I don't see why certain types of job have tips, and yet others don't.

My hairdresser has a box for tips on the counter and I usually put £2 in. My hairdresser charges me £3 for a dry cut, £4.50 for a wash and cut or £10 for a cut and colour - far cheaper than other salon in the area.

I tip waiters in a restaurant. Unless a service charge is auto added, then I don't tip.
But I hate the tipping culture - why should I be expected to supplement someone's income because their employer doesn't want to pay them a decent wage?
Who ever tips mcdonalds staff though?? They serve you your food, work hard, take a lot of abuse from the public and are very low paid...why do we tip some and not others?

nope-as my wife cut's my hair!!

I always tip if we go out and it's a teenager serving etc, as i respect them for getting off thier backside and earning a living instead of relying on mum & dad for everything! they are also working on a low wage too!
