Do you tip your hairdresser?

I usually tipped my hairdresser £2 or so, with one hairdresser charging around £20 and the other around £12 for wash and cut (I don't like my hair blow dried). I usually only went to the hairdresser every 2 to 3 months.
However, for the past year or two, I cut my own hair using scissors bought from Superdrug and advice on how to do it from the internet.
I never understand how people can pay £50, £100 or more for their hairdo each month.
I pay £100 every ten weeks so I stuff a tenner in a jar every week.
Mine comes to down to I'm willing to pay as I turned my hair green once messing around with bleach and that at home! Cost me a fortune to fix so now I just pay the professional from the start. I've tried cheaper places but I'm happy with where I go now.I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -
Do you tip the supermarket worker who helps you find something?
I find it odd that tipping survives in certain jobs - employers should pay a decent wage and workers shouldn't have to rely on getting hand-outs from customers to pay their bills.
This a million times!!!!
I buy into the tipping culture, but it is outdated.
People should have a fair wage for their services, prices should be set to include this.
No one should have to rely on "tips" to make a their wages up. They should have a set rate. Commission is different & more of a performance incentive.
We should all stop tipping & employers would have to pay a fair wage & price their goods/services accordingly.
Tipping should play no part in earnings in a first world country.0 -
No, I do not tip him, I pay him enough to do my hair!!0

Erg OP, I feel for you. I have social anxiety disorder and a trip to the hairdresser is one of my least favourite things to do
There is all the touching, the awkward conversation ("Did I watch Britain's got talent the other day?" - "No. I don't really watch TV" ... *massively awkward silence*). Then the really ODD hair massage when washing it (Is this meant to be a NICE thing, or is it suppose to get my hair cleaner??). Then you get a cup of tea.. but you can't REACH the tea.. if I move, the hairdresser forcefully repositions my head!! Then my face gets an itch and I have to try and endure if for fear of offending my hairdresser... Then comes the "tipping" question..
So, no, I don't tip. My last hair cut cost me £49 for just a simple trim, I think thats plenty for less than an hours work.
I also don't get why certain people get tipped and some don't, I have done plenty of minimum wage jobs in the past (supermarket checkout for ex) and didn't get tips so the "poor pay" argument doesn't hold to me.
I don't have social anxiety disorder, but the "chat" gets on my nerves too. I want a relaxing experience & I LOVE the head massage.
I want to read, or even maybe catch up with work emails.
What I don't want to do is chat about TV or where I'm going on my 'oliday this year.
I do appreciate places that serve nice coffee :-)
I think tipping is an old fashioned demeaning system. Prices should be set to include "service".0 -
Tip? No way Jose!
Though, once or twice in the past been temped for the junior - fantastic head massage - but she left. I usually went on half price days so only £6.00. Sadly, the owner retired, so the place closed down, still looking for a wash, instead of a spray, and miss the cuppa! And a chat - that would be nice - too often have had stony silence!I used to work for Tesco - now retired - speciality Clubcard0 -
My hairdresser now works in her own home, so I go there. She has done my hair for over 20 years. When she worked in a salon I used to tip her, but I don't now. I always buy her a nice Christmas present though
I don't like tipping, find it embarrassing.0
