With waiters, I usually pay by credit card but give them 10% in cash, but less if the service is slow. My hairdressers has a tin with named slots for the stylists on their counter, but discreetly, not in your face. I pay £55 for cut, colour and blow dry every 6 weeks. I usually put £4 in for the stylist and £1 for the junior who washed the hair.
I always find it embarrassing to know who to tip when abroad and make sure I read up about it in the travel guides first. I once had an upsetting experience on a package holiday (can't remember where) when we were on a coach trip. My husband had cash to tip the coach driver, but I got off first, several people ahead, and was shouted at because I didn't tip him.
That is actually absolutely disgusting.. Who shouted at you exactly? You didn't, did you? :rotfl::rotfl:0 -
When you can't tip anyone in the NHS, despite them often earning a poor wage for what is expected of them and damaging their own health in the process then we probably shouldn't be expected to tip anyone else.
I'd rather tip someone that had saved my life than someone who's cut my hair!
I do tip and I enjoy tipping when it's not expected as it's generally really appreciated but I don't think anyone in the UK should expect a tip. I'd like to see it stop completely as a routine thing over here.0 -
Roughly what are people paying for haircuts, and how long do they take? What I am getting at is estimating how much they charge per hour.
I pay £97 for one colour on the underneath of my hair, highlights on top and a wash, cut and blow dry. I'm in the salon about 3 hours though 45 mins of this is waiting for the colour to take.
I do just round it up to £100.
I never use mobile as other than an eyebrow wax it is the only beauty treatment I pay someone else to do. (Not into nails or spray tans etc) I've found a hairdresser I don't have to chat constantly too! She is quiet as well! I do enjoy the head massage though.I'm never offended by debate & opinions. As a wise man called Voltaire once said, "I disagree with what you say, but will defend until death your right to say it."
Mortgage is my only debt - Original mortgage - January 2008 = £88,400, March 2014 = £47,000 Chipping away slowly! Now saving to move.0 -
I tip my barber when i get my son's and my hair cut.. Works out £27-ish so I round up to £30
I never tip taxi drivers though. I've seen how well some black cab drivers live0 -
I guess the barber does not tip me in my job. Therefore I don't tip him.0

I tip my hairdresser but that is because he's really good, always does what I want but is happy to offer constructive advice too and is chatty but without being overbearing. I normally tip him a fiver in cash and then pay the cost of the haircut on my card. The haircut usually takes about an hour and 15 minutes including washing and costs £50 although I should add this is in quite a trendy part of London. I have a fringe and get that trimmed for free at the same place as well, which I estimate is about 10-15 minutes' work.
Oh, and I agree about the tea thing! I usually wait until my hairdresser has gone to get the dryer/straighteners and then gulp it down, by which point it's usually cold..."A mind needs books as a sword needs a whetstone, if it is to keep its edge." - Tyrion LannisterMarried my best friend 1st November 2014Loose = the opposite of tight (eg "These trousers feel a little loose")Lose = the opposite of find/gain (eg "I'm going to lose weight this year")0 -
no its too dear and often more than one person works on your hair.
Maybe you have a person who does the shampoo then someone else to cut,:footie:0 -
No I don't tip in the hairdressers as I think they charge more than enough as it is. If I go, I usually get a wash, cut and colour, which comes to over £100.
I used to get tips when I worked as bar staff in a country pub/restaurant, and we used to pool all our tips at the end of the evening and share them out between us. Was a nice wage top up. It wasn't an expected thing though, but very gratefully received.
We tipped when we went to America as they expect it. I think it's odd, but if I go to another country I follow their customs.
I don't tip anyone, and don't feel bad for not doing so0 -
I hardly ever go to the hairdresser but when I do I don't tip. I'm mean !
I don't tip taxi drivers, waiters etc either. They are dong a job and getting paid so I don't see the point. I will make a point to say a big thank you and have even emailed companies to compliment staff when I have received great service, but as for extra money - no.0 -
Yeah I tip £2 but then my hairdressers is reasonably priced. It's £30 for wash, cut and colour - no matter what I get, highlights full head or roots. I get tea and biscuits, a read of the paper and OK mag and occasionally get offered a glass of wine (don't accept buy nice to be asked!).0
