Do you tip your hairdresser?

When I was young my mum used to tip the hairdresser, but as an adult I feel like a pratt doing so. Is there a consensus on this, what is the 'done thing'? Please be gentle, I'm socially awkward and feeling fragile after a trip to the hairdressers, as I always do :P

Yes, always tip in cash 10% of cost, pay for hair on credit card.0 -
I don't tip anyone.0

I used to but don't anymore. I tend to go to the same place which offers a 10% discount to employees of my work. Tipping them would negate the discount (and frankly they charge enough as it is!

Yes I always tip mine. If it's a new hairdresser and I feel awkward I just hand over the tip to the receptionist when I'm paying the bill and say can I leave this for xxx. If it's someone who's been cutting my hair for a while when I am saying goodbye and thank you, I just hand it over then. Never been met with anything other than a big smile and thank you for doing this. It's one of those jobs which aren't very well paid and where tips are a normal thing to receive, not like some also poorly paid jobs where they can't be accepted like home help or carer for the elderly.0

If customers are expected to always tip, why doesn't the business owner put up the prices by 10% - that would be the true cost of the haircut - and ban tipping?
Ognum always tips this, she didn't say that everyone else has to!
The tip goes to the stylist who is usually on an hourly wage, the cost of the haircut goes to the owner of the business who pays wages and overheads out of that. A tip isn't complusory but is appreciated.0 -
My hairdresser has cut my hair for about 20 years! She is self-employed as she has a "chair" in a local salon. I never tip her but buy her a bottle at Christmas.0

And if the owner charged the right price for the haircut, he/she could pay a decent wage instead of having the employees relying on tips from customers.0 -
No I don't tip my hairdresser as it's pricey enough already.0

That's a good point, if I were still going to a small, independent hairdresser I'd probably feel more inclined to tip. However as I attend a larger chain salon, I do feel confident their prices are designed to include a tip anyway.
If nothing else, I've been going there every few months for about 3 years now, and they haven't appeared to take it personally or take it out on my hair! :rotfl:0
