How are you coming to this conclusion? Maybe he worked long hours in a job he hated to support his family? Maybe the wife wanted the life of Riley and spent all the money on fancy things putting him under even more pressure to ensure they didn't get into debts? Maybe she was abusive and controlling? We just don't know either way and therefore don't think we can come up to any conclusions, let alone advise that he deserves to be taken to the cleaners.

Well said. I know families where dad works long hours, mum works part time (older children) or not at all, and dad still does the bulk of the household chores, cooking etc. They seem happy with it, so it's their business, but I've always found it a bit strange.

...She wants spousal maintenance backdated to last June....

To get spousal maintenance she will have to (a) divorce her husband and (b) convince a court to issue the necessary order.

The whole situation is a joke.

We have a friend who's clearly giving bad advice and very much self entitled.

A mother who refuses to claim benefits for her kids, is clearly very bitter about the relationship (no judgment things take time to heal) & expects her ex to carry on paying for her (I say carry on, as I dont believe people who are truly self sufficient would expect this)

& a father who all we know for sure is paying more than he is legally obliged to and has a new GF

For this reason he should be 'taken to the cleaners?'

I'd counter this by saying the mother should be investigated for something resembling neglect! Not maximising your income for your children's sake is absolutely ludicrous!

This is before we even consider the housing and property situation - ie rented/owned/mortgaged? Furniture etc left behind?

The main issue though is, is dad not wanting to see the kids, or mum not letting him. A guess, bearing in mind hes paying more than required is that he does actually care about his kids! Conclusions from that are fairly straight forward.
  • I think this thread won't be getting the reaction the OP had in mind when she wrote it. If it is a true story and not one of the many made up tales of woe to keep the traffic coming to Martin's website then only Jeremy Kyle can resolve the OP's problems.

Suspect the OP is the wife anyway. It feels too intense the way she said '' after being nothing but a brilliant, faithful and loyal wife''. That's personal, not an observation.

    Agreed with this.

And i realise loyalty can mean many things, but when i read that sentence i cant help but think -

A: Faithful and loyal mean the same thing
    &
B: that ex should be thankful she didnt have an affair

after being nothing but a brilliant, faithful and loyal wife.

If she had really been that great I can't imagine why her husband would have wanted to leave...
