The pine nuts and sesame seeds are great thrown into the blender to bulk out homemade smoothies.Yeah, whatever. I'm a grown up, I can take it...0

Perhaps try the loaf studio, just select the ingredients you want to use (you might have many of them in your cupboards already) and it will come up with a nut roast type recipe for you.

OMG this is just so clever!! :jDogs return to eat their vomit, just as fools repeat their foolishness. There is no more hope for a fool than for someone who says, "i am really clever!"0 -

Make sure you boil the dried lentils rapidly for 10 minutes, skimming the foam off the top, otherwise you might get poorly.
Add passatta and cream coconut to the cooked red lentils to make a simple lentil daal. Bulk it out with veggies - potato and peas work well.
Use sesame seeds in a stir fry, give it a lovely flavour
Put butter beans in a pasta sauce, yum0 -
Thank you to everyone - especially those who have warned me about being ill. I didn't know beans and lentils could do this to you!
Thanks particularly for the vegan loaf site, that's fantastic, I shall bookmark that!
Question: I soaked the beans on Saturday evening and de-skinned them, then they've been in the fridge since then. If I make a loaf tonight, that won't kill me, will it?!KiKi
' <-- See that? It's called an apostrophe. It does not mean "hey, look out, here comes an S".0 -
I'm on a SERIOUS food budget - no money until Saturday! So am living out of my cupboards/freezer. I have lots of beans and pulses. These lentils/pulses have been in my cupboard for ages so really want to make use of them!! Any idea what I can make with them? I have: Yellow split peas, pearl barley, red lentils, dried chick peas, dried red kidney beans, dried butter beans. I have quite a lot of herbs and spices as well. Could do with something I could make in a big batch and freeze really. maybe a couple of things including something suitable for a toddler?
Thank u!Back Comping after a 2yr break! :j0 -
Yellow split peas, pearl barley into a veg soup (any veg, stock cube, bay leaf etc)?
Lentils, chickpeas, kidney beans into a curry / chilli? Or to pad out mince dishes.
Chickpeas and kidney beans make a nice salad if cooked and cooled, with some kind of dressing (can't think of an exact recipe sorry!)
Dried butter beans are a disaster for me sorry!
Don't forget to soak and boil, I don't see why a toddler couldn't eat what you cook if you're careful on salt, although might be a bit high in fibre if s/he isn't used to it?

I'm a fool quite often0 -
Erm, do you have my storecupboard???:rotfl:
I was in exactly this situation and have in the past month or so got into gear and using pulses a lot more, I try to aim to include them in 2-3 meals a week (thats including lunches)
Yellow split peas - make a dahl, using whatever veg you have along with red lentils and these
Pearl barley - use in meat stews and in soups to add bulk. Or how about trying lemon barley water, I haven't tried this yet but planning to follow the recipe under Delia's homemade lemonade (on her website)
Red lentils - I've use these in dahls, also have made a red lentil pate/spread for sandwiches (just cooking them with some onions and other flavourings), also put some in meat/veggie mince dishes like bolognese, shepherd's pie, chilli etc to bulk it out and use less mince.
Dried chick peas - homemade hummous!!! dead easy and lovely. I've also made Delia's chickpea & chilli cakes (on her website)
Dried red kidney beans - use in meat or veg chilli, you could also use the kidney & butter beans together to make a rice & bean salad
Dried butter beans - I've only had butter beans tinned, but most often use them in a veg soup.
The main thing about using dried pulses is remembering to soak them first really, which is easiest left overnight, or if you forgot then bring them to a boil and soak for an hour is ok with most pulses. Always discard soaking water & rinse before you use, apparently this decreases the 'bean effect'(!)0 -
This is what my two toddlers have had most of the time since they were weaned and their dad!
Soak 1/2 cup of red lentils for 30 mins in water (saves cooking time), then boil until done adding 1 cup of water, pinch salt, 1/4 tsp turmeric and 1/2 tsp cumin seeds if any, could leave to cook until mushy. To make a khichdi I'd add 1/2 cup rice to the soaking dal and cook altogether until soft. Add some butter just before serving.
To do another dal, omit the rice, and, when the dal's done, in another pan heat 1tsp oil, add 1/2 tsp cumin seeds, 1/2 tsp garlic and when the seeds pop, add to the dal. This is for more flavour. Add a squeeze of lemon juice or a few drops and serve with plain rice - at least thats how we eat it.
Dried chickpeas, could soak and pressure cook, then blend with 1tbsp flour, salt, some parsley if you have any, 1 egg and some cheese. Form into balls and either shallow fry or bake.0 -
I use this site www.justslowcooking.com a lot now for recipes.
It has a beans section as well as many others.HTH
PS apparently if anyone has a problem with *ahem* excess wind if you pop a few pieces of the herb Borage into your bean meal it helps
*makes a note to self to try this as living in a house with 4 males!!!!*0
