  • My other standby has been adapted from many sources...

Creamy Lentils - (serve with eg grilled fish or pork chop)

Boil lentils (I use Puy Lentils for this) as per packet instructions in chicken or veg stock. When almost done, and most of the liquid gone, stir in plenty of chopped parsley (have used other herbs too) and a tablespoon or two of creme fraiche/0% greek yog/plain yog/phili etc. Warm through - I do this off the heat. Adjust seasoning.

..and not a parsnip in sight... :D

If you're looking for a book with lots of excellent recipes for this type of food then I would definitely recommend Rose Elliots The Bean Book (it covers all pulses, not just beans)
I've had it for a few years and it gets used again and again.

There are lots of ways but this is easy and a good standby if you`re tired and can`t really be bothered going through a recipe. We`re having this tonight!!

Take a whole pack of beans and soak and cook them (don`t forget the 10 min hard boil first ) strain. Rinse. dry on t towels and portion into bags and put in the freezer. I use haricots, chick peas, butterbeans etc

I`m making a healthy, very tasty, veg soup and I`m adding a pack of cooked beans and at the end some noodles. Afterwards jelly with berries and rice I cooked in light coconut milk (as I`m downsizing my store of food). I have also made a lovely loaf in a pot on a stone (so it is light and crusty) and I will have some delicious french organic butter for my dh. He loves this sort of food

fantastic idea to soak, boil and freeze them!
i think part of the reason they get left in the cupboard is that i dont get round to soaking them!

    thanks

Bear in mind when replying that I am the world's most stupid cook with no cooking knowledge or skill.

    (True.)

I need to use up some stuff in my kitchen cupboard which was purchased - and never used - when I went through a Gillian McKeith phase. I say phase: it only actually lasted a few days when I bought her book and odd ingredients then did nothing with them.

I have: butter beans, lentils, pine nuts, sesame seeds, oat bran.

My question is: is there a way to mush all these up together to make a kind of bean loaf / bean mash thing?

(I know I could use them separately in things, but I don't really cook things to add them to, so I'd like to use them all up in one go together.)

    Thanks if anyone can assist.

    Yours stupidly...

Erm off the top of my head you ought to be able to add pine nuts, butter beans and lentils to a casserole but would probably have to soak the beans first (I think they contain toxins if not soaked). Sesame seeds you could sprinkle on our breakfast and oatbran too. Or you could put sesame seeds into a flapjack type thingy.

The Butter Beans need a really good overnight soak, then a good rinsing and cooking - timings should be on the packet.

Just a thought - if you manage to concoct some kind of 'all-inclusive bean loafy thing' out of that lot, then be prepared to spend a long time in the loo!

butter beans - dont like these so no advice
Lentils - add to soup or casserole
Pine nuts - lovely on breakfast cereals or salads
    Seasame seeds - as above
Oat Bran - add to your cereal

Perhaps try the loaf studio, just select the ingredients you want to use (you might have many of them in your cupboards already) and it will come up with a nut roast type recipe for you.
