When do you leave for Dubai? Was that spur of the moment trip? I so want to go to Turks and Caicos, booked AI or DIY? Share hotel details for your stays, I want to snoop on TA?

Dubai: here now, staying at Doubletree by Hilton, Jumeirah Beach in a 2-bedroom suite with a kitchen ( we are 4 people inc. 13 and 11yo). Booked last April using leftover Qantas FF points for the flights and getting an advance saver rate inc. breakfast direct with Hilton. Joined Hiton Honors for free wifi.

Amsterdam (March): used BA avios x4 for flights. Booked into Hotel Vondel 2 bedroomed loft suite.

France (July): flight and carhire with BA, saved money by booking them jointly. Rented gîte with owner.

New York and Turks and Caicos: two of us for free with Avios and Amex companion voucher. Accommodation to be booked. Considering 2 bedroom suite at The French Quarters in Hells Kitchen for NY; will be booking Beaches AI for T&C. Just monitoring prices (vary hugely from travel agents) and trying to decide which of the tens of room configurations to go for.

    Thanks Pete, I've made notes.

I did think that it sounds a bit tortourous rather than a holiday, & Mr Duke says he's dreading it. Trip of a lifetime & that's what I get :(

    Glad you're enjoying yourselves.

Deva - i just noticed you are going to Riga next month - will you come back and update?! Where are you staying??

We did a holiday a month in 2013 and absolutely loved it! Go for it - you can find some incredible bargains out there :):D:D

Loved Riga; stayed in wellton terrace hotel about 10 min walk from the centre.

It was cold but not enough to put you off doing anything although a good pair of boots needed as things like gritting is ad hoc.

Visited kgb museum, war museum and orthodox cathedral which are all free.

Beer was good, strong and tasty! We saw four breweries whilst there.

Best food was at Folkklub which we loved almost despite its tourist popularity.

    Enjoy

I LOVE Washington, hoping to go back again for a week in October but not in a position to make definite plans atm
(August far too humid for me)

DC is top of my list for later this year. I normally do SE Asia in October but I fancy doing something very different this year. I know Boston and NYC well but have never got around to visiting Washington. I'm thinking of doing it as a twin city trip with Philly.

My shortlist of NE India or Burma has received another option. Bearing in mind that I can probably only really go for two weeks I'm wondering whether I'd be better off in Africa. I've fancied The Okavango Delta in Botswana for some time and it does have the advantage that it doesn't have any of that pesky jet lag when flying from Blighty.

I'll be doing some Googling soon.

I almost added Philly to my trip, but decided adding one city and 4 nights to my original plan of a week in NYC was enough! Would love to go to Philly in future though, and would probably combine it with another trip to New York. Boston is also on my (rather long) list of places to visit one day. I am never going to have the time or money to everywhere on my list so will need to do some serious prioritising!

When I have looked at Boston in the past I've found hotels ridiculously expensive, not sure if I was looking at the "wrong" time of year or if they are always expensive?

Yes, unfortunately Boston hotels tend to be a little expensive especially downtown but some of the outer suburbs aren't too bad. Whenever I've been there is has always been work which was paying. If you are prepared to cope with sub-zero temperatures then you can get some reasonable prices during the winter.

Spent 24 hours in Philadelphia about 4 years ago (found ourselves with a spare day at the end of a longer trip) We'd been to Gettysburg the previous day and I've been to dozens of historical sites in Europe and across the USA, but I've never felt such a strong/real sense of history anywhere as I did in Independence Hall. I could have spent much longer there.
The Liberty Bell is one of those 'iconic' things to tick off, but no real atmosphere there.

Long weekend to Reykjavik booked for November so that's my obligatory one new country of the year taken care of. My only slight issue is that four nights of gigs could be a problem for my back but I should be okay-ish if I can rest it during the day.
  • 11 days until Marrakech prep in full swing for my birthday trip!

My best friends booking all Spa treatments and Im in charge of the excursion toAtlas Mountain!

    31 Days unitil Miami/Cruise!
