dont forget the cheap beer !!!!!:)

Damn you Tony, you always go one better! :p
We are only planning to give them up from about December to February, although I like the Lake District in the summer, I don't fancy being there so much in January.

Fair enough Chuck (as they say up North).

You're talking about Greece? I don't think their economy is doing so well...

Facts have no place on the internet. :) In my biased World, modern democracy was promulgated worldwide by Great Britain which is the best Country in the World to live in come rain or shine.

Hmm, actually forget all that...Spain does have cheap beer as Tony rightly says :D

Do you happen to know if it would be easy to rent it out cheaply, but not holiday lets, to one person/family for about 7 to 8 months per year. I say cheaply (probably about 66% of the market rent) because it would just be for peace of mind, to recover some/all expenses and less hassle than doing holiday lets.

I can't imagine that there will be many prospective long-term tenants that only want to live there during the low season and then clear off for the summer.
Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks

You interpret my feelings incorrectly. I am not against tourism per se, rather the immense impact it can have on the lives of residents.

Perhaps if you could read the Spanish press and watch Spanish TV you would understand how the Spanish feel about the uncontrolled impact of tourism and the insistence of certain groups on living in "expat" enclaves, learning very little Spanish, and contributing little to local life and community.

Over the several years I have been living in Barcelona I have seen tourism make a major, and often negative, impact on the city. But before anyone thinks that Barcelona would crumble without the tourist dollar, I'll point out that it only forms 11% of the local economy. The negative effect is disproportionate to the effect on people trying to live their normal lives.

Personally I didn't come here to live in England-in-the-sun and only hang around with fellow Brits. I came here to experience life in a different culture and learn the language. Something I've succeeded in doing. Today is Sant Jordi (St George's Day) and the custom is for women to present men with a book, and men to give women a rose. One of the many local customs I've grown to love, like the Castellers (human towers) and the Caganer (ok, that's a bit hard to love ... look it up).

    Thanks for your input

I dont live in Barcelona so cant comment , but I haven't seen opposition to tourism here on the Costa Blanca

I live in a small pottery village ant the locals welcome and encourage tourism as it brings money and work here !

I also dont know any of my ex pat or Spanish friends that stay up all night raving , do your friends ? (un less there is a local fiester or birthday party of course ! )

I guess drinking and partying happens all over the world , I :)know there is more of a drink culture in the uk than here .

You seem negative about people moving to Spain or visiting it , do you feel it would be better if if only Spanish people lived in Spain and only certain people visited it ?

I prefer to live in the free world ! with the hope one day we will all unite for the good of humanity

    Cheers Tony :)

    Hi Amber,

I also am in a very Spanish area , but I dont think it is wrong if expats want to live here in a British community.

Every one should have a choice to live and mix with who they want .
I know people with little Spanish that are very happy here , and are still made to feel welcome .

Guess it must be different in your area ?

I can understand people wanting to relocate for the better climate , cheaper cost of living and up graded property .

Good luck to them , many people move to the Uk to make their lives
    better , why not ?

    Cheers Tony Agost Alicante

Those that choose not to mix shouldn't then be surprised that resentment of lazy, rude incomers causes laws to be passed that severely restrict or financially penalise the property transactions of foreign nationals. You are always going to be an easy target for local politicians.

It is the opposite, I would be looking for someone to live there during the summer, we would only be there in the winter.

Normally the way it works is that if you want to rent the property, you charge less to a person or family that is gonna stay the whole year. i dont think that person or family would be happy if you kick them out after 8 months

Some people only want to rent a house on the coast during the summer season as they go there to work, so you charge more, becuase you know it is just for the season.

    Hope it makes sense?

Yes it makes sense, and it is good news because actually what I want to do is to rent it out at a reasonably low price in the summer and use it myself in the winter. So it is good to know that there is some sort of demand/need for summer only renting.

    But he isn't right!
it is more about getting away from the UK winter. I would be happy with an average of 3-4 days per week at 16 degrees (warmest time of the day) during Dec to Feb, from the records available that looks achievable, what do you think?
We are hoping to spend our winters in Spain in a few years time (maybe sooner)
    Hi Tony,
We are thinking of spending the winters out there, when my wife retires

It is quite clear from my earlier posts (above) that I want to use it myself during the winter, and rent it out during the high season.
