It is the opposite, I would be looking for someone to live there during the summer, we would only be there in the winter.

Ah, ok. I still think you'll struggle to find medium-term tenants as I don't think it's a big market.

You'd also need to read up carefully on Spanish landlord/tenant law - I'm not very familiar with it but I believe once you've rented a place out as the tenants' main home it can be very difficult to get them out if they decide they don't want to go.

I'd say holiday lets would be a safer option.

I'm not convinced we'll actually rent it out yet, as after being a landlord for over 24 years in the Uk with 8 properties in London. I have already had enough of it, although we may well have sold up in the UK by then. As we won't start looking for a couple of years and it will take a while to find out what area we want, so the earliest I would envisage buying is about 4-5 years. On top of that we have seen very good value long term winter lets, but as we have a dog it does (understandably) reduce the properties available to us. The thing is though, by then I will probably be willing to pay more to buy what I want, rather than compromise on lifestyle. I could see myself actually wanting to live out there from October to early April, but unfortunately my wife sees things differently.

My main hobbies are walking, running, cycling, swimming and lawn bowls, so Spain and the Algarve (except the very high season) really appeals to me.

Those that choose not to mix shouldn't then be surprised that resentment of lazy, rude incomers causes laws to be passed that severely restrict or financially penalise the property transactions of foreign nationals. You are always going to be an easy target for local politicians.

I have some good friends that cant speak Spanish I don't consider them lazy or rude , not every one finds learning languages easy , and I think it is unfair to discriminate against them .

They do not move to Spain for politics they just want a better quality of life . I am sure many people in the UK cant speak English , cant see the difference

except most ex pats here require no or little financial help and support them selfs , so good luck to them and Spain welcomes the money they bring with them I'm sure !

    Cheers Tony Alicante:)

Well ... ok, you're determined to feel it's ok to go to another country and try to make it like a little piece of home.

I think it's darned rude, not to mention pointless, to move to another country if you can't or won't learn the language and don't want to immerse yourself in local life and culture.

This goes for ANYONE moving ANYWHERE.

    Ok Amber

I think it is just a case of us agreeing to disagree !

That is the good thing about forums like this , we can see different view points .

So best just to accept we are different and move on ! :)

ps whats the weather like where you are today , it was a bit strange in Alicante city today not cold but a bit hazy ( smog like )
not the normal blue sky I love so much .

    Cheers Tony

Why? There must be lots of people who love everything about their home country (in this case the UK but it could be any Northern European country), apart from the weather.

What is so bad about people moving around the EU to find what they want? The idea of quaint foreigners with their quirky little ways is so last century.

We now live in an international environment where mobility of people (and capital) is a positive force for good.

I agree free movement and choice is a good thing , better if we all unite instead of fight !

I try to keep open minded and have Spanish and English friends , but at the end of the day it is up to the individual who they befriend .

Just a wry smile here because I know that if there's one thing British expats hate, it's another British expat taking away their uniqueness. The thing that makes them feel special amongst the crowd.

And most of them think the problem isn't them, it's always the others.

Not directed at you at all, Amber, I'm just smiling because I know how it is!

I do know some people that pretend to be more integrated than they really are , at the end of the day we are still mainly considered foreigners ( but not in a bad way ) Spanish say it as it is , if you are fat you ,are fat , they are very straight to the point.

But its not bad just a cultural difference

    Cheers Tony:)
