do I have any grounds for EE breaching contract?
What exactly part of the contract was breached? I thought it was about providing mobile services, not wifi services...
Also, only some phones even supplied by EE directly support this extra service.

    Don't forget Virgin Smartcall:

    "Using SmartCall abroad

You can use SmartCall wherever you have WiFi access, including outside the UK. So, you can make SmartCalls to any number in your home talk plan from abroad. You just need to remember that your inclusive calls are set according to UK time."

I have been having a lot of trouble with this and called them yesterday, they confirmed what I had read on a couple of forums that if you did not get your phone from an EE shop then you will not be able to use this service.

They're telling you porkies. Phones do not have to be purchased from EE, as i bought my iphone 6 from Apple sim-free and using this with an EE sim lets me use wifi calling. Btw which phone have you got? At present EE only support a few handsets but they will eventually roll this out to all handsets provided the hardware supports it.

I would have thought I am paying for a service which I am being denied access to and other customers with the same contract are able to access. the fact that phones4u acted as an intermediary was irrelevant?

will keep making a fuss and ultimately will not renew contract

And I assume that it makes no difference whether you buy direct from Virgin or through Carphone warehouse ?

You don't need to have bought the phone directly from EE, for Android what you do need is to have the EE firmware version on the phone (there are ways to put this on other versions, Google is a good starting place).

SmartCall from Virgin isn't actually WifiCalling in the same way this thread is discussing.

It is an app offered to Virgin Media Telephone customers (not Virgin Mobile customers) that allows you to make calls over wifi that are included in your Virgin Media home phone allowance, you cannot make any calls that are outside your allowance (the allowance on your Virgin home phone, not your Virgin Mobile).

You cannot receive calls or send/receive texts via this app.

    Android app

    iOS app
