You probably need to explain this to me (about saying "if everyone looked after themselves, there'd be no need for charities). I'd hold this to be self-evident, so can't see why they'd be uproar.
Well, erm, it was the early 1980s :o The Welfare State was only just coming under attack, for the first time. The concept of self-responsibility was barely started. And let's be fair, the client group of this particular charity sometimes has very little function (thats reality - and I have a cousin who has Down's Syndrome, who's held down a job at McDonalds for 20 years - and she gets bored by it, but others in that client group include microcephalic children, without a family or a charity looking after them /their families, they're dead).
I would disagree with that. First of all humans in general don't hate for no reason at all. It's usually to psyche themselves up so they will compete (up to the level of kill) over scarce resources. In times of plenty, it's in everyone's interest to live and let live - conflict is "expensive". I've probably given away the answer to a question I asked there... ;)
    :D:D:D
    "Charity begins at home."
:T I *do* feel bad about it sometimes, but as I say, I'm just keeping my head above water :o
You could fix that [living in the first world!] by moving to Hull... ;)
Norty Z :D And Hull University is a multi-generational thing now for my family :j
It's probably about here where I do my soap box about supporting the local hospices. I think (and this is not from personal experience so use appropriate salting) that they do good work. Certainly the conversation a few weeks ago that said local Councils should take over their work left me :eek::eek:
Ah, well I'm with you 100% on that one. *Almost* any local charity (excluding local branches of national charities) will be good, but hospices ... they get my vote, every time.
Don't get fooled by training. That's just being able to regurgitate what other people have told you. I still can't believe Ehrlich still gets paid to spew his nonsense.
Oi mush, I don't parrot :D for one thing, it was more than 40 years ago, and it was all about pre-technological societies - its the *method* of thinking I'm yabbering about :)
I'll leave you with a picture and a few questions...
    1. How much of the area in that circle is land, and how much is sea?
    2. How many time could you divide up the rest of the planet into
areas equal to the land area in the circle. (Beware of projection inaccuracies)
Ooh, thats interesting! But you've veered into mathematics, and my problem with numerical detail will bite me, so I'm not going there :o:p I like it, though :)

I would disagree with that. Many times (in my family at least) everyone avoided "charity" and worked in some way, and pulled together as a family in some way. That had been going on since the late 1800s and was going on throughout the 1970's and 80's.

It's only been in recent times (as in the past 10 years) that my mother has been of the attitude "You paid for it (NI contributions) you claim it."

I would absolutely agree with that. The concepts of "if there was no need of charity, charities would be dead" and "somebody somewhere will always need help for something" do not (in my mind at least) exclude each other.

Well you shouldn't - as I say "charity begins at home". It's a bit like when they say "put your own mask on first" - if you give so much to homeless charities that you end up homeless - you haven't really helped...

They don't count as local! Not unless you consider a McDonalds to be a local [STRIKE]restaurant[/STRIKE] eatery.

Mathematics? No...estimation... Look at the circle, looks like approx half is sea, and half land. That's one population AKA 3.5 billion people. Split the circle into two (hemispheres) and use your thumb held out at an appropriate distance so it looks the same size. Then move it around the map. I estimate about 15 hemispheres/thumbs can be stuck on the Earth's surface. That's 16 populations in total (including the circle already there). As opposed to the 2 populations at the moment (one in the circle and one outside).

Or 8 times the current population.

Ironically, the population of the planet is now double than when Ehrlich published his book. Humans - so incompetent at dying off...

loving coming back to all the chatting ... Interesting perspectives and views and I find myself agreeing with almost everything said. I think like Beanie it will remain with donating time ( although I had forgotten I do donate things as and when I am having a clear out, remembered thanks to KC) and I will keep it to local things

Z the one that I am considering getting back into was very successful last time, so successful other people used it for their campaigns, unfortunately another company is now trying to do what the previous one did so we will go back to campaigning again.

Well this week see's me delivering health education to a full school I am a tad nervous about it but I am sure we will do our best ( there is a team of us thankfully)

Next week I have one of my last exams, it is a clinical exam so studying up on that but getting to the stage of over thinking things, so will take a wee break and get back to it on Monday I think.

I then have placements to complete, one more exam and a paper to hand in and I am finished. Had my last official class this week and it was quite surreal, seeing some people I wont ever see again and some I dont ever want to see again.

Money wise we are down to £25 for food and £50 for diesel, I think we will deff put £40 in for diesel this week so maybe the £10 left can go into the food budget, we spent £15 on alcohol and £0 on take away food.

I have had to cancel my pension for a few months as we dont have the money to keep it up, I am however managing to put a little bit into the ISA so not all the money I should be paying into the pension is lost for retirement.

It's a blip on the journey of FIRE and one we are actively acting on and dealing with

Hey all, not been about much as i have been so so so busy with uni etc, have sat a few exams done some papers and been on placement since february, I am in place for getting a distinction but it has been all hard work, with very little time for anything fun.

I finish placement in just over two weeks then I get my life back for a short while.

Financially we are getting by, we had to take out a £4k credit card loan at 3% but I know we will get it paid so I am not to worried about it, we had cleared off the previous one so this was just an extension in a way.

I havn't been able to do any shifts due to studying/ placement so finances were getting tight, I had even started getting bank charges, so this loan works out cheaper than those, I dont like the idea of taking out a loan but I really didnt like the idea of bank charges and hopefully this will see us through till I can get a job.

Not much else happening really, it's been a case of head down keep going for so long now, I am hoping to be able to get some time to relax and just be me for a wee while, then get our home all organised etc before I start work, then once working get back to some sort of financial normal and start paying into pensions etc again.

    Hope you are all well
