SC and GdB, i can see how parents know what cutlery to use for what dish and take care to keep seperate, but how does family life accommodate this? Are your offspring diligent when at home with you and were they throughout teenage years. I could imagine it being a source of conflict here.
Quite a few tablespoons here , well worn silver plate that belonged to Ohs mum and a set of antique bone handled fish cutlery. Silver soup spoons but only four of them and rarely used as i dont like the feel of them on my lips. I imagine they taste metallic. no onelese has this problem.
The veggie dish was a great success. Easy, delicious and looked good. I decided to make a vege red wine sauce rather than the madeira sauce, but may make the madiera sauce for the weekend. I was home alone and could not get the madiera bottle open. It was also £14 for a half bottle and I was feeling a bit mse.
I have discovered a need for a large trifle bowl. I think I want something cut glass and traditional. Our largest bowl is our fruit bowl, which is port merion botanic, so totally unsuited to a traditional trifle. I have not made a trifle in about 20 years.
PN, we are stil adding to our Christmas things too. This year two scatter cushions with Robins on from Mr S and a dancing christmas tree to join dd's collection of bouncing /dancing/ hopping musical christmas novelties. It makes a cheesy christmas corner, and we make all the toys compete X Factor style.0 -
We had an old style cookery teacher and she insisted we knew how to do it....caused a little bit of stubborness of my part when she insisted I had set the table sitting wrong for myself as I had put the fork on the left and the knife on the right when (as a left hander), it should have been the other way around.
I have never ever eaten with my cutlery like that! Think it comes from living in a family of right handers, you just follow what everyone else is doing, although my brother does use his knife and fork in the 'wrong' hands.
It's also why I laugh when parents think their child has a disability or some kind of special need which needs different provision because they are left handed, why the big deal? We never worried about it and although I moan from time to time about things being set up for right handed people, I just get on with it.
I even use a mouse with my right hand, the first time I used one was at an interview, it was set up on the right and although it was a little fiddly at first, I put it down to the fact it was the first time I had used one (plus I was absolutely pooing myself I was going to mess the interview up).
Phew, went on a bit of a rant there...sorry guys!
I'm a leftie and feel the same.
Some things are a little awkward when you are very small, but you learn to get on with it. I did write my name in perfect mirror image when I was tiny.
The idea of left handed shops baffles me. No one is going to rescue you with a left handed ruler in the big world so right handed parents should let their lefty kids get on with it. Just because you find it difficult to demonstrate and might need a mirror to get your head around something, it doesn't mean a child needs a mirror image of everything in irder to learn. I'm sure nothing feels natural to a small child when they are learning fine motor skills, until they've mastered it.
Nothing makes any difference to me now other than properly right handed, moulded scissors and I think they are just a stupid invention. I buy the peelers with the centre blade as I like having a firm layer of skin on my fingers. I learned that the hard way!
I'm sure I remember being given a pencil with a ridiculous contraption on it because left handed. I write with my hand upside down, because if I don't, the what I've just written smudges across the paper. I shouldn't be holding a pen 'properly' if you want to read what I've written. I have lovely handwriting - or did, when writing was still in fashion.
I play musical instruments right handed and probably do a lot of other stuff right handed, but I'm not even sure. I just do whatever feels comfortable. It doesn't matter!Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Congratulations. Were you seeking more responsibility or was greatness thrust upon you?
Thanks Spirit. There was another job that I really wanted and was holding out for, but when we restructured it no longer existed so had to do a bit of a rethink.
This one isn't my dream job, but it's interesting and its good to ring the changes. Only problem is that to do this job, I've had go give up the one part of my old job that I absolutely loved. If that was made clear from the outset I may not have applied. Oh well.
By the way I loved your post on being an orphan. A brilliant way of looking at things and one of those posts I wish I could thank twice. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Had my performance review today. In summary:
He: "So Generali, how come you're so fricking awesome (apart from at a couple of inconsequential things)"?
Me: "Just born that way I guess"
He: "Excellent. We're doubling your bonus. DO NOT LEAVE THE COMPANY".
Me: "Sweeet. More money, my favourite"
He: "Let's go and get a cuppa. Fancy doing some more days each week?"
Me: "Sure. As long as I do it from home"
So that was nice. And I finished my tool to measure the carbon intensity of funds and compare them to a benchmark like the FTSE 100 or MSCI World Index. TBH it is pretty impressive. It's very much a team effort I should point out: I wrote the VBA but most of the actual analysis was done by those cleverer than me.
It's soooo humid. I've got the air con on full to try to get some of the moisture out of the air. It's only 23C and I'm sweating. We've got some pretty funky storms coming apparently although they're going to be worst down south.0 -
Gen that's brilliant. How much are you enjoying sticking two fingers up to your old employer? This one sounds waaaaaaay better. Please stay safe in the sun and learn the A-E of melanoma: A = asymmetry, B = irregular borders, C= different colours, D= diameter, larger than 6mm, E = evolving, is your mole changing? Shame it took them so long to realise but its how it ends that matters, not how you get there.I think....0 -
Congratulations viva - can you negotiate keeping the bit of your job that you like.
And to you Gen, obviously recognition for your all round brilliance. It would be lovely to have them still. But not at the price of them
becoming infirm, suffering or lost to dementia, and there are no gaurantees they would have remained well and enjoying life.
I have upped the stakes recently to dodge household tasks
"I is disabled, and I'm an orphan".
It lightens the mood around two unpleasant facts
I would prefer that Mr Bugs had died a year earlier than he did, given that none of it was pleasant, as I'm sure he would had he known.
How about 'I am an orphan and I have no family at all', is that a get out clause?I suspect GDB and I can beat your overload, needing sets for meat dishes and diary, plus another set of each for passover. That is just "everyday", We also have ''best cutlery".
You win. I have some from my mother with every variety of cutlery that you can imagine and then there is the everyday stuff that is a bit of a motley collection. Teaspoons seem to have been acquired from service stations. Tragic.Doozergirl wrote: »I have made a mushroom risotto
Freezes lovely, shall I come round for 7:D.
No idea what has happened to my finance manager, normally he doesn't let me spend money but yesterday he let me buy a new super duper, all singing super secure( though obviously not migrant proof:() trailer. That is what makes me happy:o even though I can't unwrap it till April.0 -

I write with my hand slightly upwards to stop the same problem, so my hand is under the writing rather than on it, again just adapting how the others were doing it...must admit it became a lot easier once we switched to ballpoint pens from fountain ones!
Re instruments, I played right handed instruments left handed, my guitar I just turned upside down and learnt that way, then when we did a concert and because my style ruined the symmetry, I had to turn it right way up and play right handed!
I've even managed to suss out using right handed scissors, it looks a bit ungainly and I am left with deep indentations on my fingers but I just about manage it...or used to when my blooming hands worked well.
Peelers! Ah, only just realised that was why I could never get on with the one sided blade ones, goodness knows why that didn't register, I thought it was me being useless :rotfl:We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.0 -

We keep the cutlery in different drawers, have different sinks, different table cloths, even different dishwashers. Likewise, pans are kept in different places and (sometimes!) marked up with different coloured nail varnish. It's a whole system, rather than a memory exercise! No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0 -

TBH the job is probably better suited to my skills and temperament.
Increasingly my job is going to be looking up unusual information about companies and economic systems and looking for insights in that information. Remind you of a particular poster round these parts?
For example, today I was looking at the fraud that was attempted on Mrs Hastings' house and the implications for FinTech and banks (bad for FinTech and good for banks IMHO).0
