Not beech. Ours are old now, been replaced over the years as they look shabby quickly.

Been put off wood by other people. Rented a lovely cottage last year, but the wooden worktops had suffered.

We have Compac quartz worktops (American brand, but of course others are available).

They seem very durable so far, but we don't have cupboards with tins above which could fall on the worktop.

The equivalent in Caesarstone would be the Nougat colour (ours is blizzard white).

Downsides? Expensive and heavy - very heavy.

I'm not having overhead cupboards either.

Thoughts have moved to why the heck am I spending a load of money on worktops - no idea if I will move, and a cheap ( by Southerners standards) house in a not great area, wouldn't see a return anyway.

Wickes do some really nice deep wood effect laminate. OMG, she said laminate - is there a poverty alert?:rotfl:

It's difficult to argue against laminate. Good quality laminates do exist, they are value for money, and are durable and easily maintained.

People have a similar snobbery about laminate flooring. It's like many things : you can get really good quality or really cheap.

WE have wood, no doubt it will suffer as we don't oil it nearly often enough - I suspect if you do oil it and never put things on it then it would last ok.
    I think....

When we moved in here we had a cheap laminate on an otherwise decent kitchen. We used granite transformations, who use the existing worktop as a base for granite tops. So all is not lost if you go for laminate and then change your mind.
