This is the week that keeps on giving, Sunday cold/flu, Sunday night 3 hours awake with DD2s mega nosebleed resulting in a trip to A&E, from 12:30 - 3:30 Monday sick enough to be off work, Tuesday back to work too soon, Wednesday off work again as flu clearly not better, Thursday did something to lower back, Friday struggled into work with lower back/sciatica so bad can barely walk to find email from boss saying we had failed to win large pitch and that our existing biggest contract was likely to be terminated because of departmental overspend and reminding us that we are contracted to work any where in the country if need be then struggled home find letter from bank cutting interest rate on savings account costing us £900pa :(
    I think....

This might be the one TINY spot where I've "out poshed" Silvercar :)

My kitchen, being modern, has a low level plug underneath the worktop, intended to be used by a washing machine. There's another in a space intended for a dishwasher. The fridge freezer plug is similarly placed in a low position. I've then got a bank of named isolator switches all together on another wall, so from one spot I can isolate/turn off any/all of those sockets.

Of course... being able to use a washing machine would've required a proper floor to have been laid properly .... which didn't happen, so I daren't/can't use mine.

    :)

I'm back from having been fed my tea :)

It was sausages in a jar of sausage casserole sauce, mash, peas .... and a spot of cake, which was served as a pudding with custard. Also came home with a bit of cake for tomorrow :)

Thinking about silvercar's predicament.... would it be a daft idea to leave the worktop alone and, instead, channel into the wall to drop the plug down? Easier to channel that out and replaster a few inches.... unless it's tiled. And even if it's tiled you're only going to remove/replace one square tile. Worth a thought.

How about open up the connector on the back of the washer, disconnect the lead, feed the end through worktop and reconnect - job done, molded plug intact....
    I think....

So washing machine installed. A+++++++++++ rating only possible because the programme that is used to calculate the rating is 3 hours long!

Anyway, in normal use it is quiet and has a large door, both pluses.

Need to work out how to drill a neat round hole in the (cheap) worktop to let the plug go to the wall point rather than out and back over the depth of the worktop. Apparently the plug has to remain hardwired or it will invalidate the warranty.

Cut the flex half way along. Drill a small hole for the flex to pass through. Fix a grommet of the same size as the flex on the worktop Feed the cut end with the plug on through the grommet.

    Buy a joint box

Join the two ends in the box below the worktop.

I doubt that the warranty can be invalidated by removing the plug but, another option is to open the machine and locate the joint box where the flex terminates inside. Remove it, thread the flex through the hole and reinstall in the machine.

Third option is to cut the sealant behind the worktop, unscrew it and slide it out far enough to thread the plug up behind the worktop. Refix the worktop (cutting a slight groove if necessary and reinstall the sealant.

Goodness, you all think I am far more capable than I am!

I doubt opening up the back of the machine or putting a break in the flex would be more compliant than taking off the plug.

Putting a big hole into the adjacent unit, big enough for the plug and for the lead to double back sounds the easiest and it may also have the advantage of not having to persuade OH to move the heavy machine.

If it were me ..... I'd probably get an extension lead and plug that into the machine plug, then affix it to the side of the machine with some double backed velcro. Then, when I wanted to use the machine, pull the extension plug off the side of the machine and plug it into the wall, so the wires only go across the worktop when the machine's actually in use.
