Everytime I thank a post, I get taken to the top of the page. Which is a pain. So excuse me if I don't thank you till the gremlins are removed.

The new car allows facebook notifications to appear on the sat nav! Don't worry, I haven't linked my facebook app to the car yet, but interesting to know it is possible.

My Satnavs got a feature that will take you to the nearest decent Pub wherever you're heading to  Although it gets it's data through Google, so not always right. :rotfl: It will also take you to the nearest Supermarket, Chemist, hairdressers and goodness knows where else!

..... and in the same way I've no desire to be bombarded with people's photos of children and endless updates on what their kids did (e.g. like one might see on Facebook if one were daft enough to frequent it).

    That's me told :(
    I think....

I find the hardest bit is turning my ill-formed, convoluted sentences into something that might come out of the mind of an 11 year old. Only good thing is that I won't let DD use my ideas unless she shows she understands them which means a paragraph can turn into a helf hour learning session so she is beginning to think it is quicker and easier just to do it herself.

Last night I had a slight surprise when she suggested that creationsim must be true because it was in the bible - I mean I've nothing against sending the kids to a church school in the hope they will gain morals and a desire to be nice to people but when they start believing it things become more challenging. Thus we had to have a lecture on how even Christians understood that in many ways bible stories are parables not supposed to be taken at face value. I guess the Catholic church does have form when it comes to supressing original thought.

Talking like the young requires every other sentence to start with the word "So" interspersed with the words: like, basically, kool, mega, sick and for the female covered in hearts.

    So your second para becomes:

    What an awful thought.
    Our input was limited to
    a) financial
    b) transport with luggage at start and end of year
    With DD
    c) Visiting her in Finland in her year abroad
    With DS
    d) Proof reading dissertations/reducing final essay word count
    e) Talking him through shopping for, and cooking, a roast dinner, then later full Christmas dinner. I only found out later that his role in the cooking was to sit on the worktop relaying my instructions to the rest of the flatmates.
    Most importantly
    f) Love and moral support.

I think there is definitely a trend towards helicopter parenting. How do the little darlings cope when out in the real world? Do their parents still act as alarm clocks and also fight their battles for them?

No helicoptoring here. DD would not have dreamt of involving us in actions ( money was a whole different ball game).

It was only after she had started univ, that we learnt that the parents of her friends had written the offsprings "personal" statement. We did not even get to see hers.

OH did enable her year abroad, an internship in Italy with hot and cold running palace, farm and ski lodge f.o.c as the guest of a lovely (wealthy) friend. She declined:( and then disaster struck and she was unable to go at all). So our role was reduced to hiding our disappointment and supporting her decision to protect her health.

Hope you are right, the RC approach seems to be to indoctrinate young and often in the hope that they will have 'faith' before they are old enough to apply rational thought to the whole thing. Apologies if any NP are offended, I know faith is a topic best avoided on the NPT.

Our DD was baptised RC, we are not practising though. From early years in prep school although she liked the vicar who regularly came to school, she had no time for " religeon" at all. By the time she got to studying other faiths and visiting their places of worship, she was really more interested in the cultural influence and rituals. We have never been "anti" but she has a real dislike borne of what I know not what.

CK - I suggest you switch off social media and go to bed. Think with a clear head in the morning.

    I concur.
    Delete your post.
You'll be surprised how things are resolved by the morning.

I will in a moment Silver.

I'm just speaking to someone about something else (work-related, but not related to any of this), and about to put the kettle on for the last time :)
