    Two outstanding issues:

1] Did Doozer get the zebra? They're priced at £275 again now
2] Did SC's fencegate get resolved, was the man paid OK?

    I don't know.

Everyone in RL tells me not to ask and to wait until I hear from him if he still hasn't been paid.

It is reasonable to assume that someone who committed to make a payment would do so after a reminder, isn't it? I have a niggle of doubt that my neighbours don't fall into that category, but am reluctant to take ownership of the problem. I know a friend of fenceman who has volunteered to go banging on neighbour's door, but I am not sure that is a good idea.

It is also reasonable to assume that fenceman would get in contact again if he still hasn't been paid.

Why is that a big problem? Do they think it's a big problem?

If they find common ground in the short and medium term, I don't see why it would be a problem in the medium term. Love for the individual is clearly greater than one's faith in this instance.

He doesn't think it is a problem, but seeks to persuade her that her views are wrong. She would prefer him to have some faith than none. Her parents have warned her that people are reluctant to commit outside their faith (they are wrong in the case of DS2). I worry that it could become an issue between them in the long term.

If I'd paid my part of a debt then I'd be inclined to wash my hands of the rest. There's no gain and plenty of loss by getting involved.

I have to admit. I have felt alienated to the point of departure over this discussion before.

Don't go and don't let the fact that you have different views to some make you think that your views are less valid. For some people compatibility is important for others it is irrelevant. We should all be able to respect that, in the same way that we all have different taste in say music.

I know, but I do feel the responsibility that I employed him to do the work.

Trades people are difficult aren't they. The drive man turned up this mornign and said 'Oo Those bricks are in worse condition than I thought, you will have to replace them fro an extra £100'. the bricks are fine, the 1100 isn't goign to happen but this was said to DW and I then had to contat the guy firmly by text and say if it isn't the oringinal price then don't do it. He seems fine but it has just soured things and now I wonder if we will cut corners elsewhere as he hasn't been able to upsell :(
    I think....

Ain't nothing like a sweeping generalisation!

How many bricks? 200 bog standard ones or 100 unusual ones is about £100. Not sure what sort of mark up he was expecting.

Nice trades people excepted of course - didn't realise I even need to say that :)

Quote was for 2.5k, one of 3 all around that price. Suggestion this morning when they started was unless we buy £1100 60m2 of new bricks then it won't be a great job. The bricks are fine, not cracked or flaking at all or really very much marked. Once they are down again and pressure washed they will look fine - sure not 'brand new' but perhaps nicer for that imho.

    re: trades people.

I operate on complete trust. Obviously, this can be unnerving when DW asks me how much a job will be and I just shrug and respond with "we will know when it's finished".

Just like you get tradespeople from hell, I seem to have accidentally recommended a customer from hell to the joiner I regularly use.

When someone operates on a tight margin, which he does, then I feel bad for introducing another bad payer.

I'm not allowed to recommend the joiner to others now !!

Oh, £1100. Yeah. You'd check the bricks before you started but there's a whole trade for reclaimed bricks so you can reuse if they're good quality to start with.

If the bricks need mortar chipping off, then it's cost to the builder to do it. Easier to buy new bricks in that case - if it's his money being spent!
