The start of an el nino pattern has been identified. It will mean fewer hurricanes, wetter weather in Western USA and a harsher winter here

Heard this on tv about week ago.

The last big El Nino event was in 1997/99, can't remember what the winters were like then as I wasn't here, but the period 1997-2001 had very few major tropical storms in the Atlantic.

It is meant to lead to more High pressure systems sitting over Europe, but unfortunately it is developing too late for this summer.

I am no expert on el nino I hasten to add. Just repeating what I heard on the news, can't even remember whether Beeb or Sky.

    Here's an article from beeb...

Re Great Yarmouth... Have only been there a couple of times, neither recently, however I agree that there are nicer places on the Norfolk coast. I prefer north Norfolk such as Wells Next The Sea. I'd go that way if heading for the county. It's much less developed and more charming.

Great Yarmouth isn't dreadful, it's just representative of a particular type of Britsh resort. Reminds me of Skegness, Margate pre Tate and local renaissance, Hastings etc... all fair sized seaside towns with a fair sample of fish and chip shops, tacky souvenirs, arcades and so on. Plus sometimes a funfair.

Yup, El Nino declared. Hot, dry weather. No good for farmers in Aus. Good time to be a tourist here though.

I don't think it is classic Eurovision this year. No truly awful songs, but plenty that are non-descript. My top 10 to go through to final are...
Russia (strongest 'Eurovision' song in the round), Georgia, Serbia, Estonia, Netherlands
    Joined by:
    Belgium, Finland, Hungary, Denmark, Romania.

Hooray, Belgium in the final :)
I agree with you on Russia, Georgia, Estonia and Serbia, viva, but IMO Netherlands was poor.
The best bit was the stage.

Is Netherlands the one in trouble over wearing a coming out dress?

No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

I hope that the second semi final.is stronger Wheezy. None of the songs were as strong as the winners or runners up for the past few years, though I did think Russia would give the Azerbaijan winner from a few years back a run for its money.

I've yet to see anything as strong as Rise Like A Phoenix, I'm in Love With a Fairy tale or Euphoria. I know people laugh at Eurovision, but they are all great songs.

Armenia was just dreadful. How that made the final US beyond me. Happy to see Belgium through though.

    Car Boot

I've often wondered, who was the first person to shorten "Car Boot Sale" to "Car Boot"

It seemed to happen all of a sudden.

One moment it was a Sale, the next the word had completely disappeared.

I dunno, on a Wednesday.....done some back roads? Could just be an open car boot with a ballsy and lazy kidnapper waiting for a bargain hunting single woman to come a long and topple in to his boot.
