It's been in the news a bit in the past week or so (an example from my preferred purveyor of news: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3078581/Britain-set-battered-fierce-snowstorms-El-Nino-cycle-five-years-begins.html)

Lydia: I'd never thought about the word helicopter before, that's brilliant. Never studied Greek, but I'm not too bad at Greek letters.

Me neither. I'd quite like to go to Southwold though (mainly because I think there are some nice beers from round there).

.... struggled to read the name "Ptolemy"

Me (to first student): The P is silent.

You've come across pteron meaning wing before.

I'd not know how to say ptolemy because ...I've never heard it said.
I could cope if I knew the P was silent ...still feels wrong.

Never heard/seen the word pteron before this very minute.

So, RP tells me that El Niño is active and this means than next jan to march is going to be very cold......any one interested in weather able to confirm this? I'm wondering whether to augment our store of soft wood with an order of hard wood for the wood burners primarily, but also deciding how much hay to buy, what to do about freezer buying for meat this summer/autumn.

I heard so on the telly in the last week - they were making a bit of a big event of it, suggesting there might be food shortages if it turns cold. On the other hand, they also said "of course, until it arrives we can't predict how it'll affect us each time"

I know some one called Ptolemy ( sort of, not English, so not the English version of Ptolemy;) )

Well of course. Student A might have picked up the pronunciation of Ptolemy from the video that we watched in Monday's lesson, in which the name was pronounced while being visible in writing on the screen, or from the printed notes from Monday's lesson, which detailed his incorrect theories of planetary motion, and which we had discussed out loud in Monday's lesson. However, it's no big deal that she hadn't remembered, and I was confident that if I told her the P was silent she'd be fine, which she was.

Likewise, I didn't expect them to know "pteron" itself, but to know "helicopter" and recognise that the "pter" was in there when I pointed it out to them.
Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Point them to https://www.AtaLoss.org which does for bereavement support what MSE does for financial services, providing links to support organisations relevant to the circumstances of the loss & the local area. (Link permitted by forum team)
Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.
    :)
