Sofa's fine. I agreed to buy it. £45, now trying to get man/van quotes. It's a hardwood frame, so bl00dy heavy, so I've put in there "2 man job" - and the job will also be to then remove the one I'm currently sitting on and take that to the tip.

I figured £45 for an Italian leather sofa, from a "good home" was worth it .... and sofa can be ticked off the list :)

Living room's close to looking "normal" once this is done.

EDIT: First quote's come in at £50. It's 1 mile from there to here. I hope others come in much cheaper soon!

I paid just £62 for the full move to here a year ago!

EDIT 2: 2nd quote in, also for £50.

If you were round here, I would say put something on a local group on Facebook, but no doubt you will tell me that you don't do facebook and that your area is too geographically spread to make it worthwhile joining.

Wonder if you could use freecycle and offer for free your old sofa to anyone that can deliver your new one?

The old one is too disgustingly vile to offer for free.... and I took the cover off and took it down the tip, putting two odd throws over it .... so it's not an option.

I think, generally, the phrase "you can't give it away" applies down here. The cost of moving stuff about if you've not got two blokes and a good van in the driveway means that you can't give stuff away easily.

Also, I'd prefer to stick with "proper people" as it's to be removed from a "posh/expensive house" in the first instance and I want it to arrive here without further mishap.

Council'd charge £30 to remove this grotty one, so I was hoping the delivery/removal would come in about the same price (tops).

Perhaps they will take the other one to the tip included in the £50 or another £10. They prob have a minimum fee they'll get out of bed for.
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

I did myself no favours by keeping an eye on the election results through the night, I have had an undemanding day .

    Envy.

I did likewise but had two meetings lasting 3 hours each and drove 450 miles between getting there and home again.

'Twas still an excellent result though.* :)

It's probably an excellent result for Scotland too given that the SNP don't hold the balance of power. It doesn't bode well for the next Big Scottish Parish Council elections.

We have PR in those. It won't be a wipeout.

And in the meantime, I'm enjoying a very nice Cohiba cigar tonight...

And yes, I know, some people will suggest I'm quite literally burning money.

But I reckon that's a better investment than their SNP or Labour membership subs at the moment. :)

Did NPs ever ask their parents what they did on VE Day? Or do you think they might have said but you simply weren't listening?

My mum lived in a huge extended family, so had a half-sibling, an uncle, 3-4 cousins + probably a dozen other related people all within 300 yards... and she/they were about 20, so I bet, rather than the party across the road from their house (which was family-orientated), I bet she/they were off into town 2 miles away to find boys/girls and have drinks.

I bet there was a population surge in the first 2 weeks of February 1946.

I doubt my mum would remember as she was 2 and a half, dad might have some hazy memories but he was not quite 4 and a half.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Got Alan, Chatty Man, on - and he's got Lee Mack in the chair. Alan asked him "what's the weirdest bit of trivia you've ever heard?" and Lee said "All sons will grow to be taller than their mums". He said there would be some unusual/rare exceptions, but, unless you're the mother of a dwarf it would appear to work. He asked the audience if they had a son shorter than them and nobody did have one.

If my middle brother was taller than my mum it wasn't by much. Half an inch at most if he was taller at all. Can't check now. :(

Still, pleased to read that stat if it's right. I'd like DS to end up taller than me. :)

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

Cohiba is Fidel's favourite brand apparently. I like a number 4 personally. Not too big, probably an hour of smoking if you keep going with it.

These days it would probably take me more like 2 hours to do one. Lovely with a good drop of port. Warres 77 is a current favourite. It used to be the crap house stuff when I worked in a hotel in the early 90s. You could probably quite easily pay a hundred quid for a bottle for it these days at a wine merchant.

If I kept the bar open past midnight I used to help myself to a round or two of sandwiches made with a couple of slices of the whole sirloin they roasted on a Sunday washed down with a glass of whatever the nicest wine they had open and then finish it off with a good glass of Warres.

The manager used to give me the keys to the kitchen so I could do room service. He'd then say, "remember, the food in there is for the guests not the staff" and then wink. He'd do the same thing every evening.

I just put together the bike that we're getting Mrs Generali for Mothers Day tomorrow. Worst Design Eva as I believe the kids say. Oh and the front wheel is buckled. It should just be a straightforward swap in the shop for a new one. If not then the manager is going to have The Worst Work Day Eva. I'm always nice to the staff though. What is some 16 y/o going to do to change Wesfarmer's returns policy?

It shocks me these days how people talk to shop assistants in the UK. Each time I've been back I've brought someone up on how they've spoken to retail staff. I blame the class system. Many Brits seem to think they're 'better' than the people serving them in shops. It's why Plebgate rang so true to so many I think.

If you're interested, this is what the Aussies think of the UK election:

    http://www.abc.net.au/news/2015-05-09/uk-conservatives-back-in-government/6457184

I think they read the Torygraph and Grauniad websites and cobbled together a story.

The simpleton Toynbee was typically self contradictory in her ridiculous summation of things:

    http://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/may/08/general-election-forget-neck-and-neck-this-was-a-terrible-trouncing
The volcanic eruption of nationalism in Scotland will be turbo-charged by another Conservative government they didn’t elect.

Well of course the Scots didn't elect Labour either and as they English couldn't elect the SNP it's pretty stupid to pin this one on the Tories! It made me laugh anyway but then I do wonder whether Toynbee would be better writing for the Daily Mash.

At school over here you face selection for PSSA (inter-school) sport or 'special needs' sport. The Boy has always qualified for the latter but this year got into the PSSA AFL side, the school is playing AFL for the first time this year I believe. The score in their first game played on Friday? 61-0!

    To the opposition.

Then his soccer side got thrashed today as well. It's character building they tell me.

Sorry about all that, I am clearly in rambling mode. Off to buy a nice leg of pork for dinner tonight. Nom.

Pastures, moving a sofa, especially a three seater with a wooden base, may be a two person job. I don't think the price you have been quoted is too bad.

Gen, re the way people talk to staff in shops... a colleague of mine lives in one of the posher Herts towns. Someone that she knows is a manager at the local M&S food hall who was refilling the chiller cabinets and overheard a vile woman say to her daughter... "see that woman over there stacking shelves, if you don't work hard at school that will be you in the future". The woman in question does have a degree and runs a team of several people.

Working with the great British public though, some can be frustrating but very few are truly obnoxious. I once had one who insisted I was doing my job wrong before telling me she had a degree. So I just looked her straight in the eye and said "oh really? I have a masters".

FWIW though I think the most demanding people in shops are Americans. It's not a class thing there, but they (again the minority) can be very rude to people who work with the public. I'm also sorry to say I've seen some whose behaviour towards black and Hispanic shop workers was truly appalling.
