Engagement Ring...

tbh - until the ring arrives and you can see it on your finger - you wont know.
five stone rings are lovely - more practical than the solitaire. and some hands suit one design more than the other. I have a sapphire and diamond engagement ring which I rarely wear - it sticks out too much.and tbh with my wedding ring it doesn't really fit nicely. They don't 'butt up' against each other - but my five stone eternity ring looks lovely with my wedding ring and it doesn't stick up and get caught on things. I wear it constantly. I wish it had been my engagement ring - but that is consigned to its box usually.
give the other ring a chance - when its on your finger try to imagine it with a wedding ring.
The one I found online (the first ring) was actually a sapphire and diamond five stone ring :rotfl:0 -

He said we can return the original ring0 -
I must be odd because I don't wear my engagement ring because the shaft broke and it wasn't a traditional engagement ring anyway as it was an eternity ring.0

Are you absolutely sure that you can cancel the order for the first ring?
Absolutely positive. As a regular MSE'er, I have read the T&C's several times :rotfl:
We have arranged to have the item delivered to store, so when we do try it on it will be in front of a store assistant. If it's not suitable (and I'm hoping it is!) then we will be able to return it then and there. Alternatively we could call the customer service team now and cancel the order as it needs to be sourced from another store anyway (due to limited stock availability). I would rather try it on though
Thanks for your opinions, more welcome!
I suppose another thing I'm bothered about is the actual value of the ring...these things are always overpriced, especially if you buy from a high street jeweller. I'm concerned that as the ring has been reduced so much, it's actually not that valuable at all and we're being taken in by the pricing alone! Are there any ring experts here who could help me out?0 -

If I've got this right:
you saw a ring online which seemed a good deal
you went into a high street jeweller to try on a ring in a similar style (presumably to see if it suited you) and placed an order for that specific ring
you then went into another jewellers and tried on a totally different style of ring and instantly fell in love with that
The sensible thing to do would have been to think about what you wanted and done some research into what style you wanted and the best place to buy and all about the 4 'C's and certificated diamonds.
As a regular MSE'er I'm surprised you've not seen the 'engagement ring' threads that pop up on here. :rotfl:
Personally, I'd never buy a ring from a high street jeweller chain.
I'd also never buy an expensive ring that is already made up.
Clever setting can hide a poor diamond.
I would try an independent shop or maybe consider buying on-line.0 -
My engagement ring is a trilogy ring. My husband chose it, and at first I was abit taken aback because it wasn't what I would have chosen if I had went to the jewellers myself. However, I now actually much prefer it compared to a solitaire. It isn't something I would probably even have thought about looking at, I guess it just goes to show that my husband knows me better than I know myself!
Wait until the original ring arrives, to see for sure, you might end up loving it more than the solitaire. Don't be automatically sucked in by the sparkly rings in the shops. I made that mistake with my wedding ring. I don't know why, I don't even particularly like jewellery, or even wear it!0 -

Your ring whether £50, £500 or £50,000 will always be valuable to you.
My ring cost £50 btw0 -
Wow what a diva! :rotfl:
Nah I'm only kidding hun! :j
I think it is important that you get the one you want, because you do have to live with it through the whole course of the marriage!
But U have to agree with barbiedoll that you'll be laughing about this in a few years.
Was the first ring expensive?
How much have you paid towards it?
Oh I doubt that your partner is 'hurt.' He is probably just like 'WOMEN!'
Prob a bit flustered and wondering what to do, but hurt??? I doubt it.cooeeeeeeeee :j :wave:0 -

Haha! No I completely agree, very diva-ish!! Hence why I feel so silly...
The original ring started out at £1600 and in the end my partner got it for £400, with the help of a sale and a few discount codes. We bought a house around a year ago and are putting a lot of money into that to make it into a home, so I never considered an expensive ring an option (although some may feel £400 is still super expensive!). I love sapphires and although I've never even owned a ring before, loved the idea of having such a different ring and the price made it even more fantastic. The second ring was a slightly more expensive £999 down from £1999, but is from H Samuels, which is a company I would have preferred to stay away from (don't ask me why!).
I should add that the ring I tried in store was literally the exact same ring but with rubies instead of sapphires and in a yellow gold (rather than silver). We went for a feel of the size so we could order the right one in.
Georgiegirl, that's a lovely story about the ring your partner bought you...I suppose if my partner had bought this off his own back, I would have loved it regardless. The fact I bought it makes me feel like I've made the wrong choice.0 -
I am not a huge jewellery fan, and since we have been married I just wear my wedding band day to day. My engagement ring seems a bit bulky and non practical for every day wear with the work I do etc, so languishes in my jewellery box
Congratulations on your engagement. With love, POSR0
