I have never seen anyone with an engagement ring like the first one in the OP's pictures. Don't get me wrong, the first one is nice, but it's not an engagement ring. I can imagine most people thinking the OP is just wearing a dress ring or an eternity ring.

Surely it doesnt matter what other people think of the ring if the OP likes wearing it? A friend of mine has a very simple dress ring as her engagement ring. It suits her style and she loves it.
Google 'engagement ring' and see how many come up like the one the OP posted with the sapphires. None, because they don't look like that. The ring the OP posted with the sapphires is an eternity ring.

Variety is the spice of life. Even though I wear a diamond ring now, it is significantly different to the solitaire rings that most of my friends wear, which IMHO can look a bit samey-samey (no offence to anyone who has a solitaire!).

I don't think the first one looks like an eternity ring at all.

It may be how it's come over in the photos but it looks like it has graduated stones - bigger in the middle to smaller at the outside.

Most eternity rings seem to have the same size stones.

But does it matter what 'type' of ring it is as long as it's the one the OP likes?

And although a solitaire may be the most common type of engagement ring style, it's not the exclusive design.
A quick Google of 'engagement ring styles' shows that there's lots of different styles apart from solitaires.

I've also just looked in to engagement vs eternity ring styles.

Eternity rings were the result of De Beers marketing in the 60's, aimed at older married women (to create a new market.) They traditionally have identically cut and sized gemstones, usually diamonds. They were a response to engagement rings in fashion at the time, which were round solitaire diamonds.

Obviously fashions change, and some people don't like or avoid fashion anyway. I've always thought the 'traditional' raised solitaire was not an ideal design in terms of fitting next to a wedding band (caus ideally no-one would choose the 'cut out' design of those), apart from small rub overs which work better.

I chose something more like an eternity ring in style, which I loved (as a non jewellery person also), in white gold and worn every day for almost 20 years until I lost it last year. The white gold was still as good as new fyi.

Can't find anything like a suitable replacement, whilst also believing it can't actually be replaced anyway, which is obviously very MSE! I'm not very materialistic, but every now and then I feel sad that I've lost the ring my husband proposed with. It was my favourite possession, worth more to me emotionally than my wedding ring.

So a bit of an update for you lovely people who helped me during my hour of need :rotfl:

We went to view the ring last night and it was absolutely stunning. I fell in love with it the moment I saw it and just knew it was the ring for me. I tried on some solitaires while I was there just to make sure and although they were beautiful (and sparkly!) I just didn't get the same feeling. The sales assistant was fantastic, so patient and even let me try on wedding bands with it to make sure. She must have put up with me for a good hour!

An added bonus was when she went to put it through the till, the ring was scanning at £1600 (original price). She called head office who told her she couldn't work out the problem but we would have to honour not just the website price of £480 but also the amount we got with the discount code which was £408! I could hear the assistant telling her what a bargain it was and asking if she was sure it was okay. It has since been removed from the website at the sale price (and I know it's not just a stock issue!). I know it's not very romantic getting so excited about a bargain but it has definitely sweetened the deal! :D

We also got free alterations and cleaning for two years and free re-plating for a year with it being white gold.

I'm surprised that I loved it so much because I was completely expecting to pick fault with it immediately (or at least be put off when I saw it next to the famous solitaire!) but no...perfect in every way! (in my opinion, of course!)

I just wanted to thank each and every one of you for your input. You are wonderful people!

    Thank you :)

If I'd not had you guys to moan to, I probably would have gone mad and ended up cancelling the ring through stress alone. So glad I didn't! It was really lovely to hear everybody's opinions.

It's funny though...when I was trying the ring on, the lady who helped us had to grab my hand because I was shaking so much :rotfl:

Pleased to hear you like the ring - and a pretty good bargain too from the sound of it.
