Problem with new car purchase
I went to collect my new car from the dealer yesterday (40 miles from home, 30 minutes drive from work) with the paper work I was asked to bring for the finance... I did pay a small deposit when I saw it last week but I haven't signed or seen any of the finance paperwork...
When I arrived it turned out that I needed more paperwork than I had been asked to bring but instead of saying sorry they just said you were told to bring that. As that was about to descend into an argument so I just asked for my current car back (even though they filled in all the V5 stuff and I'll have to spend £25 on a new one)..
Turns out that the garage in its haste to sell me the car has already processed all the paperwork including sending the V5 off to DVLA...
The thing I'm currently trying to work out is exactly where do things stand with the new car..

You agreed to but it and paid a deposit.
You have entered into a contract to buy the car and if you don't you maybe liable for any actual loss the garage has suffered.0 -

Does anyone else think this is throwing the toys out of the pram?0 -
None of this makes sense.. Do you actually have the new car?
Not sure what the £25 is for either..?0 -

They cant release the car without all the paperwork in place, and you would have been asked to bring the required documents - its not like they dont do handovers every day.
Even if they didnt, it would have been prudent of you to check before travelling - whats that old adage about ASSUME?
Sounds like you've thrown your toys out and now have cut off your nose to spite your face.
No doubt they'll sell the car you wanted to buy on to a less demanding customer.0 -

I took the exact paperwork I was asked to bring having explicitly asked and double checked what I needed... The salesman then said they needed more than previously stated and double checked.... So yes people make ASSUMPTIONS all the time...
It was the attitude to this incompetence from themselves that was so annoying and the final straw.... And as the deposit and such things are less than what I earnt this morning that bit doesn't really matter...
The issue I have is in the final bit of my OP. I appear to be about to receive the V5 for a car I haven't actually bought due to the incompetency / eagerness of the garage...0 -

Why not just provide the paperwork you need and take your new car? Were they particularly rude or are they asking for something extra they hadn't mentioned before?0 -

Two sides to every story..
If / when a v5 arrives, ring DVLA and explain the purchase didnt go ahead and how do you correct this. You probably dont need to give them the whole story just to get that anwered.0 -

I wondered this too, a lot of people get confused between committing to buy and committing to a means to pay e.g finance.0 -
I would ALWAYS ask for confirmation via e-mail what documents I need to bring.
I've bought a few cars from around London and I live in the North West so I make sure.

You contracted to buy the vehicle when you paid a deposit. The finance is another matter. If the V5C now has another registered keeper on it (you) then it's value has dropped and the garage will presumably seek to recover their resale losses over and above the deposit, if that's not enough.
Sounds like a complete over-reaction-why not just ask them to pay your petrol money for the extra miles involved? No free lunch, and no free laptop0
