Edit;;Just tried logging into old World A/c, never used for years, and not allowed phone 0844*******.Asif:-) dormant.

Called to cancel mine two weeks ago. Got cashback credited to current account there and then. Card was still showing as active, but I still cancelled Direct Debit and put it through the shredder. Chased this via two internal messages online and it is finally showing as clsoed today. You'll get there in the end. Just have to insist.

No company invests huge amounts in housekeeping old accounts.
Yes they need to close it for you but it's not their priority for investment.

Almost everywhere I deal with (Amex are an exception) utilities in particular, customer service is dreadful.

I sent a secure message to close my account, they replied saying as I still get 0.25% cashback I would lose the cashback earned so far. - I'll wait until January and close it then.
    My messages are below -
Hi - Could you please close my account, the 2 reasons being, 1 mainly the removal of cash back, 2 the removal of the photo on he cards.
The full balance of my account was takin from my bank today, so should be with you in a day or so.
Could you please forward my cashback payment to my bank account.
Could you please confirm this by reply ?
    Many Thanks
    Memo
    Thank you for your message.

I'm sorry you want to close your account due to the changes we’ve made to your account.

I haven’t closed your account because I wanted to make you aware that the cashback of £23.25 you’ve earned wouldn’t be paid to you if the account is closed before January 2016. This is because we’ve not completely removed cashback from your account but have reduced to 0.25% effective 1 June 2015.

If you decide to keep your account open, your cash back will be credited as normal.

If you would like to proceed with the closure of your account, please contact us again to confirm this.

If you have any other queries, please send us a further secure message.

    :-)
You should make sure cards gets closed on your credit report as it can affect your ability to get credit in future.
It a good idea to monitor your credit reports every now and again just.
Noddle is free (call credit) and statutory report from Experian & Equifax are £2 each.

Which reminds me that there was/is a free service via Equifax with CapitalOne.
Last time I closed a Cap One card in 2008 I did not lose the Equifax services and have it to this day.

I've never done a credit check on myself, ever, and at 71, don't think I will bother although I agree you are right BUT, may just do a £2 online one, just to see, nobody is using my name...I don't need credit. had enough sorting the kids/grandkids credit ratings out, and debts to last a life time:beer:.

Also cancelled today as my last statement was paid yesterday. Don't expect any problems.

It would be interesting to know how many they have lost because of this though maybe they are not bothered as I don't suppose those of us who used the cashback cards and paid in full every month made them that much money as compared to those who keep a balance and pay them interest every month

i have done well out of CapOne, CBwise, joe.. but they will have done very well from me too, of course, as the purchases i have made will have made a profit for them

and agreed lisyloo.. Amex are great, both MBNA and Barclaycard can be in fairness, but general CS is poor out there. that said, my chosen Utility supplier are very good. and, at times, i've found Vodafone to be very good once you are talking good people. and i find bank service to be good..although again that may be based on my keenness to deal with the right people.

Well, I have my Amex card paying 1.25% now (as well as the introductory 5%) so I will run down my usage of my CapOne card (seeing as my cashback ended at the end of May).

I have done very well out of the CapOne - it's just time to move on to something else.
