Sounds like she had a great idea in her head but didn't do the work to get people in, it's ok throwing a big party if you get the guests in the door.
I feel sorry for her I do, but same time one advert that barely gets any interest (shares are one thing, people actually saying they are going is another) isn't enough.
As for the rescue not turning up ~ I don't know this rescue but of the few I do know they dedicate their life to it to point where they don't have much of a life outside the rescue itself...sending messages asking why they didn't attend is a complete lack of respect in my opinion because the amount of work they do to keep things like that going is unreal and they shouldn't be guilt tripped into missing this event that someone offered to do for them to raise a bit of money.People don't know what they want until you show them.0 -

I see what you're saying but respectfully disagree, just because I know this rescue has LOTS of volunteers part time and full time. It's a large rescue with a big following. Do you not find it hard to believe that just one of those people could not give just an hour or two of their Saturday evening for this?
I think it's important to call them out - it does not give them great PR when they don't bother to show at such things because people won't be inclined to do similar events for them in the future.0 -

I thought this too and advised the lady to keep an eye out on the buckets - she struck me as a very trusting lady. I gave her my donation in note form into her hand as didn't trust the buckets not to be thieved from!0 -
Well I think its a bit sad that it was someones birthday and her friends couldnt spare half an hour to pop in and see her, never mind the issue with the rescue centre. Glad that it all turned out ok in the end.
I think to be honest just giving or such like is the way to go when trying to raise funds. I organised an event 4 years ago for the stroke association and we raised a 4 figure sum, but that was after many sleepless nights, a lot of stressing and worrying about who would or wouldn't show and a lot of advertising. I wouldn't do it again although Ive happily participated in other people's events and supported them by the way of donations.
A facebook page with a link so her friends could donate would be the obvious solution, well if they are really sorry they couldn't make it, they could surely chuck a quid or two her way online now.0 -
so was all of the advertising of this event done through facebook? see, unless i was actually interested in attending a charity evening for the cause that this lady was promoting, i wouldn't go, as her friend.
It would be different if she was a friend, and had invited all her friends to celebrate her birthday with her in the pub with the disco, and oh by the way instead of pressies/cards she'd have buckets there to make a donation to her cause of choice.
Can you tell I'm not a fan of public invitations of this kind through facebook?0 -
Advertised once?? Was she relying on mind-reading?0

People can be very fickle.
Did the lady check the availability of people? If I decided to raise money for my favourite charity, I wouldn't just pick a night to suit me, I would check whether people could attend. There's no point assuming people will just jump.Never again will the wolf get so close to my door :eek:0 -

To be fair, I support a charity for dogs at risk (I donate to them monthly), dogs in pounds that a charity try and get to rescue and foster before their time is up. There are 5000 people who like that rescue page yet the charity almost went under a few months ago due to rising costs and not enough donations. If everyone who liked the page had given £2 they'd have made the money they needed to keep afloat for a few months (they have survived but for a time they had to take only the most urgent cases).
Thats not how it happened, many people who liked the page won't donate and others will give 50 quid plus in times of need.
My point is, a lot of people see stuff on facebook, taking action is something else entirely.0 -

That it's ridiculous to put on an event and neglect to market it. If the site has 5000 likers, maybe a couple of hundred will see an individual post.
It's never been easier to engage with people - Facebook, local websites, radio, twitter, good old posters.
Relying on one post on one Facebook page is just silly.0
