That's a shame. It would have been interesting to see how many users complained about the last change (to the current look) giving them headaches and hurting their eyes. If I remember it went from an all green background to a mostly white background.

    Your memory seems slightly faulty.

The complaints then were somewhat similar, but the changes were much less severe - so any complaints were similarly so, and modifications were soon made to allow users to continue with essentially the set-up they were used to.
(I was one of those who opted for the existing look, and I don't have a white background to the posts.)

But we have 'lost' many of the experienced IT staff we had then, and it is no longer clear (to me) even who is head of IT at MSE. (Yes, I have asked ... ;))
We used to have their picture. :D
The IT team used to be involved in reasonable dialogue with regular users about problems/issues. That doesn't seem (to me) to occur to anything like the same extent now.

The amount of white glare in this latest 'style' is a complete step change. So is the layout itself.
But the worst part is that it doesn't do what forum users want it to do, or what they could do easily before.
Tweaking the colour scheme (even the daft fonts) is one thing.
The new 'style' not doing what a decent forum site should do is quite another.

I think they've merged this with a different thread on the subject ...

Yes, they've done quite a bit of merging in relation to posts about yesterday's events, but I'm not sure why you have quoted posts by elektra and myself, as we were (I believe) talking about posts from a considerable time ago.

I am using your posts as examples of how dismissive people in development fields can be hen it comes to the needs & wants of the average user. Because it is usable to them, they seem unwilling to accept that it isn't for everyone. I though this was a discussion forum?

That's nice but unsure of the relevance?

You stated in the post I quoted about "older users". I was pointing out that I am younger than you & still have issues with the new layout. I believe that is quite relevant.

I think some of the regulars have an over inflated view of their own
importance!! The forum would get along just fine without many of them.

Not at all but it would be a sensible business move for the owners of this site to take into consideration how traffic is generated & listen to what longer term users are saying.

    Good for you! Well done.

thanks. We feel good about it.
I don't respond to stupid so that's why I am ignoring you.

  • I hope it's not having an overinflated view of our importance on the OS threads to ask very nicely that we are able to continue to use the present format for as long as possible. I know we are a very small and unimportant cog in a very large internet enterprise but we like the company and companionship of the other folks who post in our small areas of interest and would like to be able to comfortably stay in touch with each other, it would be very sad if some of us (particularly the older and not so confident users of which I am one) felt we had to drop out, it's such a small ask and would mean a great deal to many posters.

Again, I never disagreed that isn't for everyone. What I have been saying is that sometimes a few users are, for want of a better word, sacrificed in the pursuit of progression. You can't please everyone and ultimately a few will be lost along the way wether you/me/they like it or not.

I spent years in IT and know only too well how frustrating it can be getting a message across to developers. I also know well that sometimes you just can't win and either have to accept it or move on.

Sorry, that was my poor choice of words. I didn't mean older as in age, I meant older as in long term users.

Perhaps they have done their research and discovered that losing a few hundred regular users who possibly don't generate them much revenue, is a good business move. Both our assumptions are as valid as each other's. Only time will tell for sure.

For better or for worse, not everyone does things the same way.

Hey Mrs L - long time no see!
Well I'm older though fairly confident but these days I prefer things to be easy. The new set up was just too too much hassle! I felt adrift in a snowy wasteland :(

the new set up was absolutely vile and completely user unfriendly. I hated it and looked a couple of times but could not be bothered posting as it was. If it appears again, then I for one, am off

Be that Martin Lewis has since expressed that we can carry on using this version, with the new version as optional for any existing members, I would assume this is now old news.

Assuming Martin is a man of his word, we can relax with the notion that this version will still be available to us.
