I'm all for people working rather than claiming benefits but I'd struggle to suggest working for a PPC or a drug dealer or a thief would be my preference over people getting some of my hard earned tax.
What gets forgotten is that a large number of the people who work for these companies, particularly lower down the pecking order, won't understand the legal side of things, and will simply be genuinely nice people doing a job to pay the bills. I'd much rather they do that then bum around at my expense personally.
Like it or not the industry exists and I'd rather such people were paying taxes. Resorting to hyperbole in the comparison to drug dealers and thieves does your argument a disservice. The industry needs proper regulation, I don't think anyone is disputing that, but to suggest it causes the damage to society that drug dealers do is absurd.0 -

More than 2 million fake fines issued every year. Far more damaging in scale than drugs are.Je suis Charlie.0 -
The answer to that question is there is no service. It's a protection racket by another name.catoninetails wrote: »Scam = Something of a criminal nature. I think not.PRIVATE 'PCN'? DON'T PAY BUT DON'T IGNORE IT (except N.Ireland).

Can't see how people like Cat sleep at night. Not being rude either, I mean it.
Oh, come off it, they are only doing what Brighthouse do, what Wonga do, what "Buy your gold for a quarter of its worth" do, exploiting the gullible.
Less venal, but almost as dishonest are those reail outlets who sell Tee shirts and trainers made in Asians sweetshops where workers are paid a pound a day, at twenty times what they cost to make.
In Rip Off Britain, half of the population makes its living by ripping off the other half. Vets overcharge, as do dentists, plumbers, lawyers, even The Passsport office make a huge profit on issuing passports. The list is endless
What about double glazing? Safestyle will happily sell windows to an O.A.P. for a 55% discvound, but will give up to 80% of their daft RRP if pushed. Its the same with purveyors of solar panels, heat pumps, sellers of fine wines, rare earth metals, self storage pods, land bankers, boiler rooms, etc., etc., etc. Scammers all.
Would these people be better employed unemployed, I think not, especially if I have to pay for their mortgages and their childrens' school meals.
Cat may work it a pretty disreputable industry, but he/she is by no means alone. As long as people buy scratch cards they will fall for PPCs' scams. He is no worse than many many others. Give him a break. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -
The Deep has a point. Is Cat any worse than the insurance company who recently engineered a pretence for cancelling a policy I had taken out, in order to charge me cancellation fees that far exceeded what small profit they'd have made from the modest premium? OK, they f****d with the wrong marine and it ended up with them very substantially out-of-pocket by the time I'd dragged them to the threshold of the County Court (much as T.D. would've done himself) but they know that most people will just shrug and kiss goodbye to the cash.
Doesn't make it right though. Those people too should be unable to sleep at night. If you are one crook amongst many you're still a crook.Je suis Charlie.0 -

Its only money Mr B, they would probably have spent it in scratch cards and white lightning, drugs wreck families. You never know how far you can go until you go too far.0 -
