I find the easy cook stuff is very bland and doesn't really have any texture to it. Ideal for the dog when he's ill, but it's not going anywhere near my plate any time soon.

What do you expect, it's plain white rice :rotfl:. Add sth to it to give it texture and flavour. Stock cube, veg, onion, the list is endless.......

I use both packet rice and proper rice depending on what I cook and how long I have. It is after all my money to spend how I like. The packet stuff is fine if cooked properly and regular rice is fine if cooked properly.
I also make my own pasta and have packet stuff, again depending on what I am cooking and time issues.
Also buy frozen ready meals same reasons.
We can't all make every damm meal from scratch, or some weeks any meal.
Why would it amaze you that people even buy dearer items?
As for red rice and the like just ask whatever supermarket you use to start stocking it, else visit the local ethnic shops, be amazed at what they sell.

If people want to buy dearer food items fair enough BUT why are supermarket shelves full to bursting with convenience foods with so little choice of other items?

The staff and Manager in Tesco, Asda and Sainsburys do not even know what red rice is and have no interest in stocking it because they say "it won't sell"!!

There are no ethnics shops near me. I sometimes go to London to shop stock up on big bags of rice, onions, spices etc but most of those shops don't sell red rice either

I do leave all the packets, boil in the bag, microwave stuff on the shelf and only buy proper rice. Just amazes me why so many people would buy rice that is much dearer and doesn't taste very nice when rice is so easy to cook.

I wish the supermarkets would have a bigger selection of proper rice. Me and OH like red rice but it's practically impossible to buy in any supermarket.

This is what you said above

And this is totally different. So actually most shops don't sell red rice, not just supermarkets, so maybe staff and manager are correct when they said " it won't sell"

And you do decry people buying "ready" rice in the first post then say if they want to spend their money that's fine.
I have seen plenty of choices in supermarkets for rice and pasta but I guess only so many companies make "ready" rice and even fewer companies make/harvest and package "raw" rice.

But can I heck find black lentils anywhere.

I'm not keen on easy cook rice. Not that I have strong feelings, it's just that other stuff is a bit better.

I don't use salt in much of my cooking as neither me or OH like the taste and, of course, it is not good for you. When we eat out I often think how salty something is and it makes me so thirsty
Generally salt is added to pre-prepared food as the simplest way to avoid it being tasteless.

Of course in a restaurant it's no bad thing for the owners if they make you a bit thirsty as wine is the thing they have the biggest mark-up on. (I've no idea whether restaurants commonly add extra salt for this reason - just throwing it out there.)

I've never heard of red rice. Does it have a very distinctive taste?

You can order red rice from here, if anyone wants to try it? I've never heard of it but it does look pretty on the plate!

I can remember spending hours, with my flatmate, trying to cook savoury rice from scratch. After using what seemed like hundreds of different herbs, spices and flavourings and simmering the stuff for ages, we came to the conclusion that the end result tasted exactly the same as Batchelors packet savoury rice! :rotfl:
